Liepaja Лиепая

Лиепая - третий по величине город Латвии, расположенный на западе Латвии в Курземе, на побережье Балтийского моря. Население - 87 000 человек. Лиепая находится на расстоянии 200 км от Риги, и всего в 50 км от границы с Литвой. От Риги до Лиепаи можно добраться на машине или на рейсовом автобусе. Лиепая - город музыкальных фестивалей и многочисленных рекордов. В Лиепае - самый большой неперестроенный механический орган, самый большой деревянный алтарь в Латвии, старейший профессиональный театр Латвии и, конечно, самый мелкий и белый песок на Балтийском побережье. Но не только пляжем и морем интересен город под липами.

The holocaust in Liepaja. Skedes. 1941.

German mobile killing units (Einsatzgruppen) operated in German-occupied territories in eastern Europe during World War II. This rare footage shows a mobile killing unit during a massacre in Liepaja, Latvia. The film was taken, contrary to orders, by a German soldier. Before the war, the Jewish population of Liepaja stood at more than 7000 residents. German mobile killing squads shot almost the entire Jewish population of the town. When the Soviet army liberated the city in 1945, just 20 to 30 Jews remained. From this site: www.ushmm.org

Liepāja In Your Pocket - Karosta (Naval Port)

Once completely off limits to civilians, the former naval port has become Liepāja's main tourist attraction. Built from 1890 - 1904 at the behest of Tsar Alexander III, the city within a city cost the Russian treasury a modest sum of 45 million gold roubles. Ironically, the massive fortifications constructed on the coast were dynamited before the First World War even began as a result of the friendship treaty signed between Germany and Russia in 1908. The complex of imposing brick buildings and barracks became known as the Kara osta (war port) during the first Latvian republic and is now simply called Karosta. The Soviets also used the base and left their mark in typical fashion in the form of ugly concrete apartment blocks surrounding the soaring Orthodox Cathedral, many of which are now abandoned.
