TUPOLEV TU-144 №77102 1973. Paris Air Show crash

The 1973 Paris Air Show crash was the crash of the second production Tupolev Tu-144 at Goussainville, Val-d'Oise, France, which killed all six crew and a further eight people on the ground. The crash at the Paris Air Show on 3 June 1973 damaged the development program of the Tupolev Tu-144.It is possible that a French Mirage jet sent to photograph the aircraft without the knowledge of the Russian crew caused the pilots to take evasive maneuvers, resulting in the crash. Another theory is that in a rivalry with the Anglo-French Concorde, the pilots attempted a maneuver that was beyond the capabilities of the aircraft.

Tupolev Tu-144 NATO Code: Charger

The Tupolev Tu-144 (NATO name: Charger) was the first supersonic transport aircraft (SST), constructed under the direction of the Soviet Tupolev design bureau headed by Alexei Tupolev. A prototype first flew on 31 December 1968 near Moscow, two months before Concorde. The Tu-144 first broke the sound barrier on 5 June 1969, and on 15 July 1969 it became the first commercial transport to exceed Mach 2, and was at the time the fastest commercial airliner. The aircraft had two major crashes, and never sold commercially outside Russia. Additionally it was unsuccessful at finding a market within the Soviet Union. The aircraft was part of the development of supersonic aircraft within Tupolev, other supersonic aircraft such as the Tu-160 bomber were more successful.

RARE TUPOLEV TU-144 LL RA-77114 Tupolev/NASA SST video

Part of the movie Les ailes du futur - 2l3 - Géants et supersoniques civils Hero of the Russian Federation, the test pilot 1st class captain Sergey Borisov talks about Tupolev Tu-144 LL flight testing. In July, 1983 this aircraft was designated as "101" and established 14 world records. These records were including a height of flight of 18200 m with payload from 10 to 30 tons, average speed of 2031.55 km/h on a closed circuit of 1000 km and 2012.26 km/h on a closed circuit of 2000 km. When the TU-144 program was cancelled, CCCP-77114 was used as research aircraft in experiments about the radiation in top layers of the atmosphere, ozone layer, thermal influence in different materials and studies on aerodynamics. In 1990 was placed in nonflyable storage. In 1993 08-2 was chosen to serve as testbed in a joint program between Tupolev, NASA and others US firms. The aircraft suffered an extensive modification that included the power plant, former Koliesov RD-36-51A engines were replaced by Kuznetsov NK-321 (engines of the TU-160 bomber). The new model was designated TU-144LL Flying Laboratory. The first flight of TU-144LL was on November 29, 1996 and a total of 27 flights were realized until the end of the program in 1999.
