Love, sex and sometimes politics. *Sarkozy is pro-American and supports interventionist as well as free-market economics. He served as Finance Minister for a short time in 2004, the same year he used state funds to rescue the energy company Alstom from bankruptcy. Sarkozy was subject to criticism for his tough stance on curbing violent protests during the 2005 Paris riots. There were calls for Sarkozy to resign as Interior Minister and he gained widespread unpopularity among disenfranchised Paris communities for referring to antisocial youths as "scum."

Japan's Strongest Candidate For Prime Minister

*Since the unexpected annoucement of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda's resignation, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) concern shifted to the race for "Post Fukuda". The secretary general Taro Aso stated that he believes that he is qualified to take over Fukuda and the administration's agenda, and indicated his will to run for the party's presidency. Taro Aso was raised in a noble family with former Prime Minister Shigeru Yoshida as his grandfather and also served as president of the Aso Mining Company from 1973 to 1979. Aso was also a member of the Japanese shooting team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Aso is known to be forte in speeches and gained popularity from his witty and sharp tongue comments in his wayside speeches. Aso is a manga fan that always carries the latest weekly comics in his car. United Arab Emirates Celebrates Independence Day

Celebration over crisis. *Long shadows from the global financial downturn hang over the United Arab Emirates as it marks its 38-year existence with flags and fireworks this week. Balloons in the green, white, red and black of the UAE flag adorn myriad shopping malls for the 38th independence anniversary. Streets and trees are ablaze with fairy lights. France Attempt for Settlement with China

"It wasn't meant to be..let the past be bygones, huh?" *Hundreds of Chinese demonstrated in front of French supermarket chain Carrefour and called for a boycott of French goods against the pro-Tibet protesters that brought on the chaotic Olympic torch relay in Paris. To smoothen relations with China, French President Nicolas Sarkozy dispatched his top diplomatic adviser to Beijing. President Sarkozy sent a letter to Jin Jing, condemning the attack and praising her courage. Jin Jing, who uses a wheelchair, is one of the athletes chosen to carry the Olympic torch and struggled against a protester trying to tug the torch from her. President Sarkozy insisted that the attack did not represent the French citizens feelings toward the Chinese people.

The bill, in part, maintains the surcharges for the gasoline and other road-related taxes. The Upper House, controlled by the opposition, had delayed interpellation on the bill for more than a month. The ruling camp plans to enact the bill by taking a second vote in the Lower House with a two-thirds majority in late April.
