Vide Domine afflictionem is neither biblical or liturgical but had previously been set by the Flemish composer Clemens. The music of this 'Jerusalem' motet is restless and highly strung, tending towards chordal, declamatory writing and expressive 'flat-side' harmonic excusions.

Consort Astraea plays the first Sinfonia by Cristofano Malvezzi, originally composed for the 1589 intermedio 'L'armonie delle sfere' from "La Pellegrina". Live recording from Harmonious Revolutions: Galileo and the Music of the Spheres (Sep 5th 09), multimedia event created by musician and multimedia artist Andrew Byrne for the 2009 International Year of Astronomy, developed for the National Academies Forum, Canberra and first presented on March 4th at the National Press Club.

Like many of Byrd's motets, this is in two sections, it is possibly the oldest of the 1589 Cantiones, being solely based upon a plainsong cantus firmus. The borrowed melody is sung by the tenor in pars 1 and the medius (alto) in pars 2; around it the other voices weave a close contrapuntal fabric, coloured by some archaic-sounding false relatons. The music has a cool, statuesque quality, and moved towards an impressive final climax. For the text I have used the old english - for those not familiar - the (f) looking letter is actually an s. u and v are reversed in sound and meaning, j is replaced with i. Where there is a double ss it was customary to put an e on the end - so "faithless" would look like this - faithleffe!
