Appreciating Art Lecture Series - What is Contemporary Art? Pop and beyond

What are the key characteristics of Contemporary Art and what makes Contemporary Art different from traditional or modern art? Why has it become so popular and so contentious? This lecture will trace the development of Contemporary Art during the wave of movements in the Sixties (Fluxus, Minimalism, Land Art, Conceptual Art) that challenged all preconceptions of what art is and can do. These movements - which we can more accurately call crises - set the stage for the art of the ensuing forty years. Main Artists: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney, Yayoi Kusama

The Great Contemporary Art Bubble BBC Four. Monday 18th May. 9.00pm. The last five years have seen an unprecedented craze for contemporary art. Contemporary art prices rose by an average of 800% while works by Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon and Mark Rothko sold for record-breaking prices of £30 million plus. Art critic and film-maker Ben Lewis spent 2008 following the contemporary art market; travelling to art fairs, auctions, museums and the offices and homes of billionaire art collectors. He spoke to dealers, auctioneers, gallery-owners, art market analysts and art collectors trying to find out the reasons behind the greatest rise in the value of art in history. He says: I didnt like what was happening in the contemporary art marketMuch of the art was mass produced, repetitive and commercial. Collectors bought it for investment and stored vast amounts of it in warehousesAnd the special privileges our society gave to art and artists were being exploited by some of the worlds richest people to make yet more money. Everywhere Ben went he was told the contemporary art boom would go on forever fuelled by a new passion for art from the worlds super-rich. But he found other reasons for the boom unusual market practices, speculation, secrecy and tax breaks involving the whole art ...

Saudi artists display contemporary art in exhibit

Hamza Serafi is dipping his toes in the waters of self-expression in Saudi Arabia where criticizing authorities is unthinkable, and the censoring of art and media is considered the norm. But the artist is pushing boundaries and is one of the 22 Saudis featured in an exhibit called "We need to talk", a public exhibition of 50 contemporary pieces of art, organized by Edge of Arabia. Nader, one of the organizers of the exhibition, explains how the artwork on display show prevailing conditions in the country. "This painting by Serafi called 'Bed of the World' reflects how people use the globe in the wrong way. The more they use it in the wrong way, the more warnings show up. In Australia, for example, it shows us the way energy is excessively used. There are problems in Russia with the elections. In the Arab world, there are demonstrations and re-elections. In Saudi Arabia, it's the need for positive dialogue without protests. In Africa, it's about buried toxic waste. In South America, it's about gangs and drugs." Artists in the kingdom are discovering creative loopholes to voice their opinions on a wide range of issues. The exhibit has highlighted some developments that have been underway, as guide Jehan Mahmoud points out. "I like the painting behind me because it represents women in general and shines the spotlight on the role of Saudi women in society. The artist has shown women in various roles in his photographs, as mothers, diplomats, film directors, photographers ...

Urban Manners. 15 Contemporary Artists from India

Urban Manners. 15 Contemporary Artists from India is a project by ART for The World and Hangar Bicocca. The exhibition - curated by Adelina von Fürstenberg - opened at the Hangar Bicocca in Milan in October 2007 featuring the works by 15 emblematic Indian artists: SHEBA CHHACHHI, ATUL DODIYA, ANITA DUBE, PROBIR GUPTA, SUBODH GUPTA, RANBIR KALEKA, JITISH KALLAT, REENA SAINI KALLAT, BHARTI KHER, NALINI MALANI, RAQS MEDIA COLLECTIVE, RAGHUBIR SINGH, VIVAN SUNDARAM, HEMA UPADHYAY and AVINASH VEERARAGHAVAN. Urban Manners proposes a path that reveals all the striking contradictions of contemporary India. The artists' works (sculptures, photos, video, installations) are inspired by the issues that distinguish Indian society, such as the immigration, the environmental protection, the loss of traditional values, the poverty and the wealth in a globalized world. The exhibition toured to SESC Paulista in Sao Paulo, Brazil in January 2010. Video by Anton.Mach

Egypt organizes first contemporary arts festival since revolt

In a bid to put the Egyptian capital Cairo on the contemporary cultural map, organizers from Egypt and Europe have arranged the first major arts festival since the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak last February. "In the past, before the revolution, the main festivals in Egypt were all organised by the government, by the Ministry of Culture or other government bodies. And it was more a propaganda tool rather than a way of creating an artistic event and therefore these festivals never really worked," artistic director Ahmed El Attar said. The headquarters of Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival are merely a short walk from the epicenter of last year's revolution, Tahrir Square. Attar says that this event will be different from past attempts. "And one of the main problems they had, is they had no programming so in this festival we have decided, like all festivals, to have programmers. So I programme the performing arts, because that's my field, and Mahmoud Refat programmed the music programme and Mia Jankowicz programmed the visual arts programme, and they're both, this is their field. That was an important decision to make from the beginning," he said. The aim of the organizers is to set new standards in freedom of expression especially in light of growing concerns of censorship in the presence of the new Islamist--led government. "I also think that now is a very important time to put landmarks in Egypt. We have an uncertain political future, people are worried of what ...
