Patsy Cline "Crazy"

When her Four Star contract expired in 1960, Cline signed with Decca Records-Nashville, under the direction of legendary producer Owen Bradley. He was not only responsible for much of the success behind Cline's recording career, but also for the careers of Brenda Lee and Loretta Lynn. Thanks to her vocal versatility, and with the help of Bradley's direction and arrangements, Cline enjoyed both country and pop success. Bradley's arrangements incorporated strings and other instruments not typical of country recordings of the day. He considered Cline's voice best-suited for country pop-crossover songs, and helped smooth her voice into the silky, torch song style for which she is famous. Nevertheless, she did not really enjoy singing pop material. This new, more sophisticated instrumental style became known as The Nashville Sound, founded by Bradley and RCAs Chet Atkins, who produced Jim Reeves, Skeeter Davis, Connie Smith, and Eddy Arnold.

Patsy Cline - I Fall To Pieces (Original Stereo)

"I Fall To Pieces" was the first song that the songwriting team of Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard composed together. They brought the song to record producer Owen Bradley in Nashville who first offerred it to Brenda Lee who turned it down ("too country for me"), and then Roy Drusky (it's not a man's song"), and then Patsy Cline. Patsy recorded it in November of 1960 with vocal backing by the Jordanaires, but the song didn't immediately gain country radio station acceptance when it was released in January of 1961. A pop station in Columbus, Ohio began playing it, and the song first captured some crossover appeal before the country audience discovered it. By the late spring of the year, both pop and country audiences had "found" the recording, but Patsy was involved in a car accident in June of 1961 which kept her from promoting the song. Still "I Fall to Pieces" reached #12 on the pop charts by July of that year, and the song's success garnered her an invitation to join the Grand Ole Opry.

Patsy Cline - Crazy (Original Stereo)

"Crazy" was voted in one poll the #1 Jukebox Hit of all time. I don't know how authentic that poll might have been, but certainly "Crazy" is one of the most time-honored recordings in popular music history. The song was composed by country music artist Willie Nelson who had made a demo of it that found its way into the hands of Patsy's record producer, Owen Bradley. After listening to the demo, Patsy tried at first to record it in the style Willie had sung it, and the results were not to anyone's liking, especially Patsy's. At Owen Bradley's recommendation, she recorded it again a few days later this time "in her own style" with a vocal assist from the Jordanaires, and what you hear is the first and only take ever made of Patsy singing "Crazy". The song ultimately became a Top Ten crossover pop hit in November of 1961 and the signature song for what little remained of the rest of her life.

Patsy Cline - You Belong To Me

Recorded in early 1962 under the direction of Owen Bradley, Patsy along with the Jordanaires delivers a heartfelt rendition of "You Belong To Me". The song was originally composed during WW2 by Chilton Price but was reworked and promoted by Pee Wee King and Redd Stewart afterwards so Chilton ceded some of the writing credit to them.
