For some reason, deepastronomy.com went crazy with traffic over searches for the Apophis asteroid. This prompted me to make this video since it had been several years since I had written the article and wanted to provide a little more updated information. Not much has been learned since because of where Apophis is, which is very close to the Sun with respect to us. Later this year marks the time when we will begin to get a good enough angle to be able to take more precise observations. What we really want to know is will Apophis go through the 'Keyhole'? If so, then we may be in for a very bad day on Sunday, April 13th 2036. Isn't Apophis dead yet? This is your SpacePod for November 21st, 2011 A couple of weeks ago we did a SpacePod on Asteoid 2005 yu55 and where you could see it. It sure would be a shame if we didn't show you this little space rock. This 28 frame movie was captured by nasa's goldstone solar system radar. YU55 is rotating faster than real time, which would have been once every 18 hours. Remember that this asteroid came closer to earth than our own moon! Speaking of asteroids coming close to earth, Youtuber SexyToshi asked, "Can you please do a topic on 99942 Apophis". Well it is still a wee bit early to talk about apophis, but it is already starting to make the news. Back in December 2004 there were predictions that Apophis has a 2.9% chance of hitting earth in 2029. since then we have refined projections for Apophis and it won't be hitting earth in 2029. However there was a possibility that Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole which would then re-align it for impact with earth in 2036. However, as more time passes we gather more data and of october 2009 the probability that Apophis would hit that keyhole was down to 1 in 250000. This is not to say that asteroids don't pose a serious threat to the survival of humanity. but in reality our best chance for survival it to become a multi-planetary species so if something does happen to one planet, we don't all go down with it. As of last night the 5th of November Nasa was unsure what YU55 is going to really do!! This Wednesday a 400-metre asteroid that goes by the name of 2005 YU55 will pass between the Earth and the moon in what experts describe a "near miss". The size of an aircraft carrier, scientists from space agencies around the world are watching this close encounter as their concerns grow over another much bigger asteroid that's headed our way. The biggest threat to Earth now is an asteroid called Apophis. In 2029 it will pass so close to Earth we'll be able to see it with the naked eye. What worries astronomers most is Apophis passing through a small corridor in space called a key hole where Earth's gravity would change its orbit sending it on a collision course with us seven years later. "The chances of a big one hitting the Earth are 100 percent, the key question is time frame," Dr Bruce Betts, from the Planetary Society, tells Sunday Night. The clearest reminder of that danger is the imminent arrival of 2005 YU55. It will give NASA a rare and close insight that could shed new light on the objects. "There's no chance of it hitting Earth.
