Baltimore: The Wire locations, part one

As The AV Club discovered, there's an upside to having much of your perception of Baltimore come from The Wire: The city is a lot nicer than you'd expect. Yes, we understood on a realistic level that Baltimore wasn't just blocks upon blocks of Hamsterdam, but we were a little surprised by how charming Fells Point was when we arrived to meet Wire location scout Eric Bannat. Of course, right in the middle of Fells Point is the run-down building that was the headquarters for Homicide: Life On The Street. (Apparently it's being turned into a hotel.) It has a giant plaque out front to commemorate the show. For the first of our two-part Pop Pilgrims on The Wire—you didn't think we could cram it all into one episode, did you?—Bannat took us to a bunch of spots that fans of the show should instantly recognize. From the basketball courts to the dog-fighting warehouse, from Marlo's corner to the cops' favorite hangout, everything is right there for any pop pilgrim to check out. (Many of the big interiors, of course, were sets, but you'll still feel like Bodie's sidekick walking around this neighborhood.) On Wednesday, another whole bunch of locations you can visit in Bodymore, including the spot where—spoiler alert!—Omar got dropped.

Nina Simone "Baltimore" (1978)

From her 1978 album "Baltimore" Eunice Kathleen Waymon (Born in Tryon, North Carolina, 21, 1933, April 21, 2003), better known by her stage name Nina Simone, was an American singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist. Although she disliked being categorized, Simone is most associated with jazz music. Simone originally aspired to become a classical pianist, but her work covers an eclectic variety of musical styles that include classical, jazz, blues, soul, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop. Her vocal style is characterized by intense passion, a loose vibrato, and a slightly androgynous timbre, in part due to her unusually low vocal range which veered between the alto and tenor ranges (occasionally even reaching baritone lows). Also known as The High Priestess of Soul, she paid great attention to the musical expression of emotions. Within one album or concert she could fluctuate between exuberant happiness and tragic melancholy.

A high school basketball player in Baltimore is getting attention not only for his amazing moves on the court, but for an urban legend that his popularity is helping to take a bite out of crime on the city's streets. Randy Newman - Baltimore & Lyrics

Beat up little seagull On a marble stair Tryin' to find the ocean Lookin' everywhere Hard times in the city In a hard town by the sea Ain't nowhere to run to There ain't nothin' here for free Hooker on the corner Waitin' for a train Drunk lyin' on the sidewalk Sleepin' in the rain And they hide their faces And they hide their eyes 'Cause the city's dyin' And they don't know why Oh Baltimore Man it's hard just to live Oh, Baltimore Man, it's hard just to life, just to live Get my sister Sandy And my little brother Ray Buy a big old wagon To haul us all away Live out in the country Where the mountain's high Never comin' back here 'Til the day I die Oh, Baltimore Man, it's hard just to live Oh, Baltimore Man, it's hard just to live, just to live "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Baltimore, Maryland

Shot on September 11, 2005. The video begins as I drive into downtown Baltimore past Camden Yards. The video then shifts to the waterfront as I walk along Pier 4 & 5 before visiting the World Trade Center, offering the best view of the city in every direction from the Top of the World Observation Level on the 27th floor. After returning to ground level I walk along the beautiful Baltimore harbor to the sounds of the many street performers. From: timvp.com
