Does Government Have a Revenue or Spending Problem?

Debt is caused by deficits, which is the difference between what the government collects in tax revenue and the amount of government spending. Every time the government runs a deficit, the government debt increases. So what's to blame: too much spending, or too little tax revenue? Economics professor Antony Davies examines the data and concludes that the root cause of the debt is too much government spending.

Sessions: Spending Scandals Reveal Government In 'Financial Chaos'

WASHINGTON, May 22--Sen. Sessions spoke on the Senate floor today to reveal a stunning finding: although the Budget Control Act says that the Chairman of the Budget Committee must set discretionary outlays at the CBO's March baseline level, Chairman Kent Conrad instead used numbers derived from President Obama's budget, resulting in spending that will be $14 billion higher in FY 2013 than the law allows. He also drew parallels between this finding and other recent scandals, including the GSA conference at Las Vegas, the Ninth Circuit judicial conference in Maui, and the Treasury Inspector General report that revealed more than $4 billion per year in child tax credits being sent to illegal immigrants who claim dependents that don't even live in the United States.
