Jesus Christ was and is the Son of the Almighty God. He was the only perfect man to walk the earth. He healed the sick and caused the lame to walk, the blind to see, the deaf to hear. He raised the dead. Yet He allowed His own life to be taken in an act of atonement, the magnitude of which is beyond our comprehension. In the Garden of Gethsemane was the beginning of the process of His Atonement - the payment for all of our sin, and our opportunity to live in glory after death. There, Jesus offered His beautiful Intercessory prayer on our behalf. As the weight of our sin and sorrow weighed down upon him, he asked the Father if it was possible for "this cup (task) to be removed" - as it seemed too much to bear. Luke records that this anguish was so great that his sweat was as it were "great drops of blood falling down to the ground" (Luke 22 : 44), a physical manifestation of his pain. However he stated it was not as he willed, but as the Father willed it. And he continued. After the agony of Gethsemane came His arrest, His trials, His condemnation, then the unspeakable pain of His death on the cross. Jesus endured all of this for us.
