9. Special and General Relativity

Frontiers/Controversies in Astrophysics (ASTR 160) The discussion of black holes continues with an introduction of the concept of event horizon. A number of problems are worked out to familiarize students with mathematics related to black hole event horizons. In a longer question and answer session, Professor Bailyn discusses the more mystifying aspects of the nature of black holes and the possibility of time travel. Finally, the issues of reconciling Newton's laws of motion with Special Relativity, and Newton's law of gravity with General Relativity, are addressed. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Introduction to Special and General Relativity Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: open.yale.edu This course was recorded in Spring 2007.

Einstein's General Theory of Relativity | Lecture 2

In this lecture, Professor Leonard Susskind of the Stanford University Physic's Department discusses dark energy, the tendency of it to tear atoms apart, and Gauss's Law. Einstein's Theory (PHY 27) discusses the different applications of Einstein's Theory of Relativity in particle physics, including Newtonian, Galilean, and Guassian laws; particle attraction and repulsion; gravitational fields; and dark energy. Einstein's General Theory of Relativity | Lecture 3

In this lecture, Leonard Susskind continues his discussion of Einstein's theory of general relativity. He also gives a broad overview of the field of tensor calculus and it's relation to the curvature and geometry of space-time. This Stanford Continuing Studies course is the fourth of a six-quarter sequence of classes exploring the essential theoretical foundations of modern physics. The topics covered in this course focus on classical mechanics. Leonard Susskind is the Felix Bloch Professor of Physics at Stanford University. General Relativity

See more clips at worldsciencefestival.com Physicist Brian Greene explains how Albert Einstein, wrestling with how exactly gravity works, originally formulated the general theory of relativity. The landmark breakthrough provided the first unified description of gravity as a geometric property of space and time. It also laid the foundation for understanding more bizarre properties of the universe—like the curvature of spacetime, string theory, and the possibility of multiple, hidden dimensions of the universe.
