Hot engine start in the Enstrom F-28 F

FWHIhelicopters.com The Enstrom Helicopter F-28 F has a Lycoming 360 engine! They can be very hard to start when they are hot. Here is what we do to get our helicopter started when the engine is hot. Go through your normal start sequence. After you spin the starter for about two to three seconds crack the throttle about 1 inch and push the mixture all the way in. If you get it started you will have to feather the throttle for a short time to keep it running, otherwise it will stop and be harder to get it started again. If you flood the helicopter with fuel, the flooded engine procedure from the POH seems to work very well. If you try a few times and it does not go, take a 10 minute break and walk away! Don't just keep grinding away on your starter! For me, this works almost every single time. I sometimes even prop open the cowling doors for that 10 minutes to let some cool air in! Our helicopter is one of the best starting helicopters I have flown, except when it's hot! Dont get to discouraged, just understand it's the nature of the beast. In ten years of flying the Enstrom this is what I have learned to be the best method to get the helicopter started when the engine has not had a good cooling off period!

Kenny Keller: A question asked by one of our subscribers, "What is it like owning an Enstrom?". I talk very highly of the Enstrom. I have this one about three years, but I have been flying Enstroms for 10 years. Super fast story, when I started flying Enstroms and training in Cleveland, it was a 95 model and there was only two of them made in 95. The one that I flew didn't necessarily get all of the proper maintenance that it should have. We called it the Piece of Sh*t Enstrom all the time. When I came back home, the local place that I went to work for had the other Enstrom that was made in the same year. This one had low hours on it, got all the maintenance it needed (it was at an Enstrom service center so it had great mechanics working on it) and so when I started to fly that one, I soon realized that the Enstrom is a great helicopter if it is getting the proper maintenance. The problem is, like ANY aircraft, if you maintain it properly you are going to have troubles. So since that time, it changed my total view on the Enstrom. Had this one for three years, like I said, and the Enstrom is a great helicopter. I have been lucky enough to train in all them, the Switzer, the Robinson... a littler bit of everything. And they are all great aircraft; I say this over and over again ...

ACCESS OUR NEW TRAINING SITE HERE tinryurl.com When I first started teaching in helicopters one of the "Old Timers" taught me something that has been a great use to this day! I vividly remember him telling me to look at the numbers on the runway as my landing spot! He said that you always want it to look like you are approaching those numbers at the same speed! I have never forgotten what he showed me that day! There is no exact speed at so many feet, just the fact that if you start at 60kts, you are gradually going to slow to 55, then 50, then 45 and so on. This is how you make it appear that you are always approaching your spot at the same speed even though you are slowing down the entire time!

This is a Turbine Enstrom Helicopter on the Heli Pad of a Greenpeace ship some where off the coast of Ireland. One of the deck straps has not been released correctly, with what was very nearly disastrous consequence. Pilot skill and quick thinking saved the day.
