Bride Kidnapping - Kyrgyzstan

3/4 Kyrgyz brides betrothed through kidnapping To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com Follow us on a curious adventure to Kyrgystan, where bride kidnapping is a proud tradition. As women struggle to preserve their autonomy, the controversial practice is seeing a surge in popularity. A young woman is washing her hands under a water pump when three men surround her from behind. They reach out and grab her. She screams, kicks, struggles and cries as her future husband watches on. This is romance Kyrgyz style. "When we met for the first time he asked me, should I send my parents or should I just kidnap you? I replied, don't do it, I have a boyfriend." But reluctance on the bride's side is no obstacle. "The second time we met, they just kidnapped me", the woman tells us as she sits next to the man that is now her husband. This is no fringe tradition: the majority of marriages in rural Kyrgyz areas result from it. In many instances it is decided between both families and the girl may even know.Technically illegal, degrading and often violent, it isn't usually a recipe for happily ever after. Unsurprisingly, "spousal abuse is higher in kidnap marriages. The divorce rate is higher in kidnap marriages." January 2012

The Interim Country - Kyrgyzstan

Watch more: www.youtube.com Despite being hailed as a model of post-Soviet reconstruction, Kyrgyzstan made international headlines in 2010 after the toppling of authoritarian President Bakiyev plunged this once peaceful country into chaos. Just five years ago, Kyrgyzstan's Tulip Revolution was praised as a peaceful readjustment of a post-Soviet state. But the revolution was soon betrayed and Kyrgyzstan descended into authoritarianism under president Kurmanbek Bakiyev. This film chronicles the popular revolt that led to the toppling of Bakiyev in April 2010 and the chaos and interethnic violence that ensued. Since 2010 the lack of power and legitimacy of the interim government has prevented the country from stabilising. As tensions continue to rise and the economy deteriorates, journalists like Gulzat Egemberdieva ask if the dream of becoming the "Switzerland of Central Asia" will ever be realised.

Kyrgyzstan Uzbeks under threat

Last year, violence between rival ethnic groups in Kyrgyzstan left hundreds of people dead. Tensions continue, with allegations that security forces in the south have unfairly targeted minority Uzbeks with routine abuses of power. Rights groups back up claims of a campaign of intimidation, but Kyrgz security forces refute the allegations. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports exclusively from Osh.
