Iapetus Fly-by

Scientists on the Cassini mission to Saturn are poring through hundreds of images returned from the 10th September 2007 flyby of Saturn's two-toned moon Iapetus. Pictures show a white hemisphere resembling snow, and the other as black as tar. Images show a surface that is heavily cratered, along with the mountain ridge that runs along the moon's equator. Many of the close-up observations focused on studying the strange 20-kilometer high (12 mile) mountain ridge that gives the moon a walnut-shaped appearance. This flyby was nearly 100 times closer to Iapetus than Cassini's 2004 flyby, bringing the spacecraft to about 1640 kilometers (1000 miles) from the surface. The moon's irregular walnut shape, the mountain ridge that lies almost directly on the equator and Iapetus' brightness contrast are among the key mysteries scientists are trying to solve. The return of images and other data was delayed due to a galactic cosmic ray hit which put the spacecraft into a precautionary state called safe mode. This occurred after the spacecraft had placed all of the flyby data on its data recorders and during the first few minutes after it began sending the data home. The data flow resumed later that day and concluded on Wednesday. The spacecraft is operating normally and its instruments are expected to return to normal operations in a few days. Cassini's multiple observations of Iapetus will help to characterize the chemical composition of the surface; look for evidence of a faint ...

SATURN'S ANOMALY: Iapetus moon... Ancient spacestation of Horus???

New stunning evidence that the ancient "gods" of sumerians, babylonians and egyptians, were astronauts actually. During a 8.4 miles flyby over IAPETUS MOON, the Cassini probe caught an image very familiar to ancient Earth civilizations... Original greyscale pic to further investigation photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov

Saturn's Moon: Iapetus Rotation

Iapetus (pronounced /aɪˈæpɨtəs/, or as Greek Ιαπετός), occasionally Japetus (pronounced /ˈdʒæpɨtəs/), is the third-largest moon of Saturn, and eleventh in the solar system, Iapetus is best known for its dramatic 'two-tone' coloration, but recent discoveries by the Cassini mission have revealed several other unusual physical characteristics, such as an equatorial ridge that runs about halfway around the moon. Iapetus was discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini, an Italian/French astronomer, in October 1671. He had discovered the moon on the western side of Saturn and tried viewing it on the eastern side some months later, but was unsuccessful. The pattern continued the following year as he was able to observe it on the western side, but not the eastern side. Cassini finally observed Iapetus on the eastern side in 1705 with the help of an improved telescope, finding it two magnitudes dimmer on that side. Cassini correctly surmised that Iapetus has a bright hemisphere and a dark hemisphere, and that it is tidally locked, always keeping the same face towards Saturn. This means that the bright hemisphere is visible from Earth when Iapetus is on the western side of Saturn, and that the dark hemisphere is visible when Iapetus is on the eastern side. The dark hemisphere was later named Cassini Regio in his honour. Iapetus is named after the Titan Iapetus from Greek mythology. In fact, all Saturnian moons are named after Titans. The name was suggested by John Herschel (son of ...

Iapetus - Ridge on the Equator

One of the many surprises of Saturn's icy moon Iapetus is the prominent topographic ridge that straddles the eauator like a walnut. This video begins along the western edge of the mosaic and pans east before returning. The Cassini orbiter acquired a strip of color and stereo images along this ridge in September 2007, near the boundary between the dark and bright hemispheres. This stark albedo contrast has been observed since the late 1600's and was famously described in Arthur C. Clarke's novel adaptation of "2001: A Space Odyssey." The origin of the ridge is unknown but Cassini's stereo data indicate the ridge at this site is broken into several sharp peaks 15 to 20 kilometers above the surrounding dark cratered plains. These are among the highest peaks in the Solar System. Patches of bright pure water ice can be seen flanking these dark peaks, which have the brightness of soot. Video is based on Cassini orbiter stereo and color imaging data at a resolution of 55 meters per pixel. Image processing, stereo topography, and visualization were completed by Dr. Paul Schenk, Lunar and Planetary Institute, Houston.

Dave Beamer finds Giant Alien & Iapetus Castle

I (Dave Beamer) have discovered many objects in a Dec. 2004 Cassini picture PIA06171. As you can see in this home video of a recently famous NASA picture it has a large alien base. There is also a huge moon based space telescope, and a large castle courtyard with a massive alien form frozen in its' smaller bottom left crater. The picture is well named "Giant Landslide on Iapetus" by the good folks at JPL. Soon, (Sept. 7th, 2007) Cassini will fly past Iapetus again even closer at about 1000 km distance just after another close encounter with Saturn's rings. I hope the bug like (locust) locals do not perceive Cassini as a spy satellite or we are in big do do...To me the odd moon Hyperion looks like an enormous bee hive. I think the bugs have hatched? Stay tuned for "Rev 9:11" Seems much like the movie Starship Troopers or something more like an invasion depicted in the video game Halo 3? ET Iapetus Castle in PIA06171

A 3 main tower castle with a large arched spaceport doorway half fills a smaller crater in the bottom left of JPL Cassini photo PIA06171. To the left of that castle is a large "Prawns" like creature with its front spider like legs up over the mile high crater wall 2nd arched doorway. It could be a space vessel as there is a cylinder one in the castle doorway and the North Pole of Iapetus has a "Fish" shaped spacecraft in sections depicted in the NAZCA lines of Peru. I think the tall towers to the top right could be Moon located "Towers of Babylon" for the space elevator cable to the decommissioned "Fish Space Elevator" platform being serviced near this Saturn moon's North pole. I am not making this stuff up. I am an observer. Download the original and lets explore Iapetus together? Please concentrate on the areas I point out. Others have found pyramids, statues, and buildings. Lots for all of us to locate the "wonders" from our solar system's ancient past. Let rewrite history together! The real story :) Dave Beamer gone38@hotmail.com Original no Zoom JPL Photo at: ciclops.org
