Bridge reflects Iraq's unity hopes

Nouri Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister has been warning against what he calls an attempted coup through ballot boxes. He is happy with a recount ordered by the country's electoral commission, a process due to begin on Monday and last two weeks. However, many fear that the intervening political vacuum could provoke more sectarian and religious division. In the latest attack, eight people were killed and 20 others wounded on Thursday when a car bomb exploded near an alcohol store in Baghdad, according to an interior ministry official. A symbol of Iraq's sectarian divide is the Imam's bridge in Baghdad, which links the Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of Adhamiya to the Shia Muslim district of Kadhimiya. Five years ago the bridge was closed after 1000 people were killed in a stampede during a Shia Muslim procession. The crowd had panicked after rumours of a suicide bomber. The bridge was reopened in December 2008 and Iraqis hope it will remain open to symbolise the peaceful coexistence they are trying to build. Al Jazeera's Mike Hanna reports from Baghdad.

Terrorists' Sectarian Kidnapping in Iraq

Terrorists are criminals who try to garner political gain by terrorizing people. They function devoid of morals or conscience. They nurture the illusion that they are fighting for a higher cause when in reality they use sectarianism to divide and conquer the Iraqi people. Iraq: Mixing Oil & Blood -- Part 2/3

Bush calls for permanent US military occupation of Iraq By Barry Grey 09/14/07 "WSW" --- President Bush's nationally televised speech, delivered Thursday evening from the Oval Office, was the low point of a week of lies and absurdities designed to justify the United States' bloody colonial war in Iraq. The ugly farce began with the congressional testimony Monday and Tuesday of Gen. David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, and US Ambassador Ryan Crocker. Bush cited their fraudulent assessment of the "success" of the military "surge" to outline a perspective for continuing the American occupation of Iraq and transforming the country into a permanent American protectorate, whose vast oil resources will be exploited by US oil companies, and whose territory will be used as a staging ground for military attacks on Iran and a strategic base for American domination of the Middle East. Bush was, as usual, shameless in his piling up of lie upon lie, beginning with his portrayal of a gradual reduction in the 30000 additional combat troops sent to Iraq in the military escalation he announced last January as a "new phase" in the war that could see a significant decline in fighting and troop levels. As is well known, the phasing out of the surge is dictated by the lack of additional forces to replace troops whose tours of duty will be coming to an end. Once again, Bush portrayed the US occupation as a struggle for "freedom" against "terrorists and extremists," denying that the ...
