Digital SLR sensors's Explained

www.FroKnowsPhoto.com There are a few different sensor sizes out there today. You have Full Frame and Cropped Sensors and now Four Thirds which I did not speak about in this video. On the Nikon end you have FX and DX. FX is a full frame sensor based on a 35mm size and DX is a cropped sensor based on a 24mm or APS size. There are advantages and perceived disadvantages to both. With Full Frame you get much better Hi-ISO capability but it is much more expensive. DX is a small sensor but makes your longer lenses act like they have more power. You multiply any lens you put on the camera by 1.5X to determine its 35mm equivalent. The downside is you need to purchase special ultra wide lenses to capture really wide angle images on DX. Another disadvantage to DX is you will not want to use those lenses on a Full Frame camera. So it becomes a dilemma on weather not to purchase a lot of DX lenses or not. On the Canon side you have three sensor sizes. Full Frame, 1.3x magnification in their sports cameras and APS-C which is 1.6x magnification. On the canon side. Any lens that you place on the APS-C sensor you will multiply by 1.6x to get the 35mm equivalent. As in the Nikon the larger the sensor the better the Hi-ISO capability the camera will be. Unlike Nikon Canon utilizes a 1.3x cropped sensor int heir high end sports camera. Sports photographers like having their longer glass have more reach. The cameras that have Full Frame sensors will be more expensive because they are more ...

Digital Camera Image Sensor Size Image Quality Comparison

In theory a larger sensor with the same pixel count as a smaller sized sensor should delivery better dynamic range because the larger photosites don't suffer from the same noise and overload effects. Although not a very controlled test because of different cameras and lens qualities I wanted to show if there was any perceived difference at 1080 resolution. Covering both stills and video using the EOS 60d, Pansonic GH1 with hacked video, FZ100 (stills only) TZ20 and LX5 and the Sony HX9V. I set up each camera to sunny white balance and tried to get apertures as close as each other as possible, about f8. I invoked any incamera dynamic range tools such as icontrast and iresolution, it worked well with all but the LX5 which gave a very flat looking image because of the boosted shadows and flattened highlights. It show some cameras fair better at stills than video and others are much more video oriented than stills. From the centre cropped images you will get an idea of resolution and noise. All images were taken at ISO100 and in bright sunny conditions.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Review: The Point-and-Shoot Revolution

The Canon PowerShot G1 X hoodwinked the digital camera market when it was announced back in January at CES. Traditionally, no fixed lens point-and-shoot camera had ever dabbled with a large sensor before, if you exclude the very expensive Fujifilm X10. But even the X10's 2/3 size sensor was not an unprecedented size upgrade from the 1/1.7-inch chips found in the Canon PowerShot G12, Nikon Coolpix P7100 and Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5. Canon has raised the point-and-shoot stakes by integrating a beastly 1.5-inch CMOS sensor within the PowerShot G1 X. To put that into perspective, the G1 X's sensor is almost as big as an APS-C sensor, which is the standard size for nearly all entry to mid-level DSLRs. That's right, the Canon PowerShot G1 X has a sensor that's about the same size as the Canon EOS 60D's sensor. Sony NEX-FS100 [Review][HD]

We've been uncommonly keen to get our hands on the Sony NEX-FS100 ever since we first heard about it back in March. You see, this is no ordinary camcorder. Its spec sheet reads like a liturgy of filmmakers' prayers: a large Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor, interchangeable lenses, XLR inputs and proper, professional controls. Sure, it comes with a $6600 price tag to match, but it also heralds a trend that should ultimately benefit pros and ordinary gadget denizens alike: the arrival of big, bold DSLR-style optics within dedicated camcorders. How do these optics effect the quality of the NEX-FS100's footage? Plant yourself somewhere comfortable and click past the break to find out. Nikon 1 J1 Review - Quality in a Beautiful Package

Nikon 1 J1 Review Nikon arrived a bit later to the Mirrorless party with the Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1 compact interchangeable lens cameras. What sets both mirrorless cams apart from the Micro Four Thirds crowd (pioneered by Olympus and Panasonic) is that they both feature a brand new sensor size: the 1-inch CX type sensor. Hence the name Nikon 1. The Nikon 1-inch CX sensor is slightly smaller than the Four Thirds size sensor, yet plenty larger than a 1/1.7-inch advanced point-and-shoot chip. But in the end, the Nikon 1 J1 produced image quality that was on par with the Olympus E-PM1, and in some cases it was even more impressive. The J1's sleek, minimalist design and sexy color options will appeal to beginners and...girls. Yes, I could not go anywhere with the J1 without being mobbed by girls asking me how I liked the "Ashton Kutcher camera." In the end, the Nikon 1 J1 proved itself as a solid digital imaging device with a performance any advanced shooter would admire. But is the J1 enough to trump the Olympus E-PM1?
