Germany rebukes Lukashenko over anti-gay comment

www.euronews.net The German government has rebuked President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus for saying he would "rather be a dictator than gay". The comments came as he took part in a ski event in Minsk. Alexander Lukashenko was responding to criticism of his government by Poland and Germany - whose foreign minister is homosexual - in the wake of a diplomatic row last week. "As for that one - whoever he is, pink or blue - who was shouting about dictatorship - when I heard it, I thought: it's better to be a dictator than gay. But God will judge him," said the Belarusian leader. Guido Westerwelle - who is Germany's first openly gay minister - called Lukashenko's government the "last dictatorship in Europe". It came after Belarus had recalled its permanent envoy to the EU and its ambassador to Poland in protest at new sanctions over alleged human rights abuses. The EU has recalled its ambassadors in retaliation for the expulsions by Minsk. "The remarks speak for themselves. And even after those comments, I'm determined not to move one inch from my initial commitment to human and civil rights in Belarus," Westerwelle said. Last year Lukashenko apologised for comments he made to Westerwelle but added that he "didn't like gays". The former Soviet nation remains diplomatically isolated, 18 years since Lukashenko took power.

Lukashenko's Biggest Fan

Lukashenko's biggest supporter speaks her mind about the beloved leader and the opposition. Belarus began to earn its reputation as Europe's last communist dictatorship in 1996, when Mr Lukashenko used a referendum on constitutional changes to rid himself of an awkward parliament. The new parliament was hand-picked, and the elections to its successor, held in 2000, were widely condemned. The new constitution also strengthened Mr Lukashenko's control over the judiciary. Both he and his political opponents compare Belarus to Yugoslavia before the fall of his friend, Slobodan Milosevic. After extending his first term by two years in the 1996 referendum, Lukashenka altered the constitution to allow presidents to serve three or more consecutive terms. The opposition is denied a single win in the House of Representatives, as well as access to state television. The security forces in Belarus are used increasingly ruthlessly to crush dissent, and ministers sacked from the government frequently found themselves harassed or jailed. Some disappeared. Western governments accuse Lukashenko of trampling on democracy and human rights, and take seriously allegations that Belarus organized death squads to get rid of political opponents. Lukashenko still tells many ordinary Belarussians what they want to hear: the country will have no truck with economic reform, "order" will be maintained, and Belarus will continue to grow closer to Russia. Lukashenko warns Belarus not for sale

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, faced with a currency crisis, has angrily warned key creditor Russia to keep its hands off state assets. The central bank took an axe to the Belarus rouble this week, devaluing it by 56 percent in an attempt to control the current account deficit, and Russia has been seeking to buy assets in return for a two billion euro emergency loan. ... www.euronews.net

Germany calls Belarus a Dictatorship: Ambassadors Recalled as Sanctions Imposed Against Lukashenko

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle called on all European Union member states to withdraw their ambassadors from Belarus, and after withdrawing its own ambassadors from Brussels and Warsaw, Belarus asked all EU ambassadors to leave the country. Germany said that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko would not manage to divide EU members. German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle gave this statement, "This is the last dictatorship. This is the last dictator in Europe, and we will not let ourselves be intimidated by such actions against one European institution or against one member state. The dictator fools himself when he thinks he can divide us. We will react together. I suggest that we all recall our ambassadors from Belarus to our capitals. This is what Germany will do." But foreign ministers of some EU states criticized the decision. Lithuanian Foreign Affairs Minister Audronius Ažubalis said, "I think it's regrettable. I think it's an unwise step because ambassadors, this is a key figure to keep the dialogue. If you are pushing out ambassadors, if you are withdrawing, it means that you are refusing the dialogue." Sweden's Foreign Affairs Minister Carl Bildt said the Belarusian president appeared increasingly desparate, "When one asks ambassadors to European Union and Poland to leave, there will be a response from the European Union. The dictator is starting to burn his last bridges, which is not going to end well for him." Minsk announced its move just as ...

Alexander Lukashenko receives credentials of foreign ambassadors.

Belarus, if necessary, can be tough in responding to sanctions of the European Union. It was stated by Alexander Lukashenko when he was receiving credentials of ambassadors. Representatives of 9 foreign states assured the President today that they are going to strengthen and develop ties with our country. Among them are Argentina, China, Ethiopia, Japan, Israel, Luxemburg, Norway, San Marino, and Vatican. The Head of State assured the ambassadors that Belarus follows principles of multi-vector nature and balance conducing international policy. According to Alexander Lukashenko, our country doesn't create problems either for neighbors or for far-abroad countries. And attempts to "reign in" Belarus, put pressure on it by sanctions, are hopeless. (Alexander Lukashenko, President of the Republic of Belarus)
