The M224 60mm mortar is a high-angle weapon used for close-in support of ground troops. The M224 system consists of the tube, bipod, baseplate and sight unit. This smooth bore system can be gravity-fired or fired by using a manual spring-loaded firing system.

This is a video i made showing off the M224 60mm Mortar system on the Seine Crossing Conquest map with the PC version of Battlefield 3. The M224 60mm Mortar is capable of firing High Explosive and Smoke rounds to provide suppressing fire and visual cover from indirect fire positions. When you setup the Mortar you get a Mortar map in the lower-left hand corner of the screen. Enemies that have been spotted by other teammates will appear on the map and you can target them with a Mortar strike. The Mortar strike consists of a single HE 60MM Mortar round. After firing off the Mortar it will automatically reload after about 3-4 seconds and you are ready to hit another target. When you want to pack up and move to another Mortar position, you need to pick the Mortar tube up by holding down the R key to put it back into your inventory for movement to the next position. The M224 Mortar that is available to the Support Class as an unlock can be extremely effective and deadly if used correctly. You can lay suppressing fire, disable and destroy enemy vehicles and hit targets deep behind enemy lines. The key to being able to send in effective Mortar fire is having your teammates constantly spot the enemy when they are spotted, otherwise you will not see the enemy on the Mortar map. Another interesting trick i just learned and you can see in the video from the ANTI EXPLOSIVE ribbon is the ability to clear away explosives planted by the enemy such as C4, Anti-tank mines, Claymores etc. A ...
