Mayawati blames Congress, BJP for defeat, says 70% Muslims voted for Mulayam

Mayawati who formally resigned today, has defended her government, which was decimated in the UP elections. Her Bahujan Samaj Party got 80 seats, as compared to 206 in the last assembly elections of 2007. She refused to acknowledge that her government had failed to provide any development for the state. She said her defeat must be blamed on the communalization of the elections by the Congress and BJP. The former chief minister said 70% of Muslims voted for Mulayam Singh Yadav and his Samajwadi Party as a result.

Truth vs Hype: Mayawati - Anatomy of a rally

In a maidan in Sitapur, two hours west of Lucknow, a large crowd gathers to hear Mayawati's first speech of the Uttar Pradesh campaign. Grand rallies, like the statues of Lucknow, are key to the BSP's myth of invincibility. But Mayawati's critics say she's trying to paper over 5 years of misrule. This week, we intercut between the rhetoric of the rally and the reality of the lives of those who attend it, to ask: Does Mayawati have more to offer than the staging of grand spectacles?

Why Mayawati lost the UP plot ‎

The veils may have been taken off her statues following orders from the Election Commission but BSP supremo Mayawati and her party found themselves "draped" in defeat on Tuesday. The BSP, which had captured power in the 2007 by winning 206 seats, was handed a comprehensive defeat this time. The BSP's tally declined sharply to 80. Analysts attribute corruption, worsening law and order situation, her inaccessibility and the absence of her much-talked-about "social engineering" as reasons for her defeat. Mayawati was voted to power mainly because the people wanted to get rid of "goonda raj", say political observers here. "The elephant will trample the criminals" was the slogan coined by her party then. A few years later, the people of the state found "goondas" in the BSP fold. For more info log on to: youtube.com
