| Funded traditionally by the US Federal Government and comprising a number of museums that differ in size, style, and focus, the Smithsonian Institution (as well as its individual museums) is now looking increasingly to the private sector (ie corporations, foundations and philanthropists) to support its capital projects, exhibitions, programming and operations as well as to build up its endowment funds. In her talk, Ms Elizabeth Duggal will briefly outline the philanthropic landscape in the US and highlight the changing face of fundraising at the Smithsonian Institution over the course of its 165-year history. Drawing on her extensive experience in fundraising, Ms Duggal will focus on the importance of relationship building and stewardship of donors as well as share the challenges the Smithsonian Institution faces in seeking private support. Ms Duggal will also present a case study on the National Museum of Natural History Sant Ocean Hall and its fundraising efforts, and facilitate a discussion based on the case study. The discussion will be co-moderated by Ms Jane Binks, Director of Development for the National Heritage Board. |
