Flintlock Musket: Napoleonic tap loading - fiction and fact

2/95th Regt (Australia) reenactors research and test tap or spit loading as shown in Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series of books, especially Sharpe's Eagle. We tested safety, speed, accuracy and penetration, all with period correct ammunition. Black powder was 2F. Ball was .67, bore of muskets was .75 inches. Notably, we did not have bayonets fitted. But we tried it and the bayonet does not prevent spitting the ball down the barrel. Anyone who locates a contemporary reference to spit or tap loading, please add the reference to the comments log. CAUTION: not all safety procedures used in this demonstration are evident in the video.

Napoleon's Invasion of Russia 1812

I made a collage of clips from the movie War and Peace (Voyna i mir, 1967). This shows Napoleon's advance into Russia's heartland culminating in the battle of Borodino and the capture of Moscow in September. Translation of the dialogue (sorry for the lack of subtitles): 0:51 Kutuzov: "Go along, and Christ be with you." 3:59 "Sir, if we throw in one more division, the enemy will be beaten." Napoleon: "Not yet. It's easy to make mistakes in the heat of battle. Confirm and report to me." 4:28 Napoleon: "We should send in some of the reserve. What do you think?" Officer: "Send in Claparède's division." Napoleon: "I can't send that! Send in Friant's division instead." 4:55 "Sir, the enemy's leading elements have been pushed back. Prince Bagration has been wounded." 5:02 Kutuzov: "You, go find out what has happened. 5:12 "Your grace..." 6:45 Napoleon: "There it is, at last, that holy capital. There it is, at my feet, awaiting its destiny. Strange, beautiful, majestic... But why is the city's envoy taking so long?" 7:16 "Sir, the city has been abandoned. Everyone has left." Some historical background: "In 1812, Napoleon invaded Russia. He aimed to compel Emperor Alexander I to remain in the Continental System and to remove the imminent threat of a Russian invasion of Poland. The French-led Grande Armée, consisting of 650000 men (270000 Frenchmen and many soldiers of allies or subject areas), crossed the Niemen River on 23 June 1812. Russia proclaimed a Patriotic War, while ...

This film was created to show how battlefield surgery was performed between 1799 and 1815 during the time of the Napoleonic wars. The soldier is Corporal Eeles who has been shot in the knee by a French foot soldier. If the knee joint is damaged, his leg may have to be amputated. A detailed examination will decide............. The film was created by His Majesty's 33rd Regiment of Foot First Yorkshire West Riding re-enactment group. www.33rdfoot.co.uk Filmed and edited by Martin Sunderland. www.martin-sunderland.co.uk

7. Napoleon

European Civilization, 1648-1945 (HIST 202) One way of understanding Napoleon's life is through attention to his Corsican origins. Although Napoleon himself would later disavow his earlier identification with the island in favor of French identity, many of his actions and attitudes agree with stereotypical notions of Corsican culture. Did Napoleon inaugurate the era of total war? This question, posed in a recent book, is up for debate. On one hand, the violence of the Revolution and the Napoleonic wars may not seem uniquely devastating in comparison to the ravages of the Thirty Years' War. On the other hand, the faltering of distinctions between civilian and combatant as well as the large-scale mobilization of state resources for war do anticipate the modern concept of total war, typically associated with World War II. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Icons of Power - Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon Bonaparte (15 August 1769 -- 5 May 1821) was a French military and political leader during the latter stages of the French Revolution. As Napoleon, he was Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1815. His legal reform, the Napoleonic Code, has been a major influence on many civil law jurisdictions worldwide, but he is best remembered for his role in the wars led against France by a series of coalitions, the so-called Napoleonic Wars. He established hegemony over most of continental Europe and sought to spread the ideals of the French Revolution, while consolidating an imperial monarchy which restored aspects of the deposed ancien régime. Due to his success in these wars, often against numerically superior enemies, he is generally regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of all time. Napoleon was born in Corsica to parents of noble Genoese ancestry and trained as an artillery officer in mainland France. He rose to prominence under the French First Republic and led successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalitions arrayed against France. In 1799, he staged a coup d'état and installed himself as First Consul; five years later the French Senate proclaimed him emperor. In the first decade of the 19th century, the French Empire under Napoleon engaged in a series of conflicts—the Napoleonic Wars—involving every major European power. After a streak of victories, France secured a dominant position in continental Europe, and Napoleon maintained the French ...
