Fukushima Japan Nuclear update 5/21/12

too weary for usual edits today... fill in your own WTF moments... Arnie Gundersen explains why a Global effort has not been made to extract the spent fuel at Fukushima SFP #4 sighting that it would draw more awareness that the United States and others have the same design on the Mark 1 containment design and the NRC does not want negative publicity. A new building material to absorb cesium has been developed, but they say NOTHING about the OTHER radioactive isotopes. Talk about the Pacific Garbage patch from the tsunami, and still nobody has plans for when it arrives. Here's a killer: Geoparks to show how natural disasters are going to be "preserved" to teach others about disasters... Meanwhile, get this, a low cost travel agency sends people to Fukushima and explains the radiation to them (of course they do NOT tell What they told the visitors) in an Effort To Increase Tourism to Fukushima! (MsMilky rolling eyes). A crack very large in spent fuel pool may threaten all life as we know it - at least in the northern hemisphere. (repeating the significance of the situation). various other articles. NRC Chairman Gregory B. Jaczko - Resignation Statement.... Stop Nuclear Welfare

Via The Guardian: "The US is facing a $15 trillion national debt, and there is no shortage of opinions about how to move toward deficit reduction in the federal budget. One topic you will not hear discussed very often on Capitol Hill is the idea of ending one of the oldest American welfare programmes -- the extraordinary amount of corporate welfare going to the nuclear energy industry...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down, including comparing this to subsidies for new forms of energy (wind, solar, etc.) along with conservative outrage over Solyndra. *Read more from Bernie Sanders and Ryan Alexander: www.guardian.co.uk Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Iran's Supreme Leader: Nuclear Weapons 'A Sin'

Via McClatchy: "Iran's chief negotiator, Saeed Jalili, took center stage after the day of talks, appearing at a post-conference press briefing under a banner headlined, in English, "Nuclear energy for all, nuclear weapons for none." He referred to the banner — which also had the pictures of five Iranian nuclear scientists who were assassinated, presumably at Israeli behest — and also reaffirmed the fatwa or order by Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, declaring possession of a nuclear weapon to be "a sin"...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from Roy Gutman: www.mcclatchydc.com Which countries have nuclear weapons and how many do they have? www.youtube.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Japan shuts last of nuclear reactors

Japan has begun the shutdown process for its last nuclear reactor, making it nuclear energy free for the first time in more than 40 years. All 54 reactors have been temporarily shut down for safety checks, but are subject to public approval before they are restarted. In Tokyo, hundreds of people have rallied to demand that all of the plants remain permanently closed. They say that last year's Fukushima nuclear meltdown, which came after the country was hit by a devastating earthquake and tsunami, showed that the risks are simply too high. Before the disaster, nuclear power supplied a third of Japan's electricity. Al Jazeera's Mike Firn, reporting from a nuclear plant at Oi, takes a closer look at the debate on nuclear power.
