-002 Anatoly Solovyanenko: "Cossack Goes to the Danube" 1988

Cossack Goes to the Danube ( Їхав козак за Дунай) 1988, sung by Anatoly Solovyanenko. Alexandrov Ensemble 1988 UK tour. Playlist of 10 items: www.youtube.com Conductor: Oleg Reshetkiin. Principal conductor: Vladimir Gordeev. Choirmaster: Grigori Novikov. Choreographer: Lev Kulikov. This was filmed in London 1988. The video shows a choir of up to 36; orchestra and dance troupe are the usual size, though. This was originally planned as an Alexandrov Ensemble tour including a 28-piece orchestra, 27 dancers, a choir of 56*, and 12 excellent soloists, and a soundtrack of these was recorded at the Albert Hall, London, 24-26 March 1988. However this may well have been a year of low morale for the Ensemble, between 1987 when their director BA Alexandrov retired, and 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell. Perhaps the Ensemble was suffering a funding crisis. When the tour reached Leicester, the tiny but supportive audience talked of rumours of 20-25 defections by Ensemble members, and of V. Kuleshov and his own choristers stepping in to partially fill the gap. It was said that all of the Alexandrov Ensemble choir and soloists remaining after the defections had been recalled to the USSR. * Some interesting names listed in the original choir (not seen here) were: Oleg Nikolaevich Vinogradov; Sergei Vladimirovich Nikitin; Nikolai Sergeevich Polozkov, but it is not known whether they were related the famous soloists. The only soloist to appear at Leicester on the evening when I attended was ...

I think this may have been the last superb performance of Kalinka by a soloist in the Ensemble's great era 1940s-1980s - especially as it was performed in very difficult circumstances. Anatoliy Solovyanenko "Una Furtiva Lagrima" L'Elisir d'Amore

Una furtiva lagrima (A furtive tear) is the romanza taken from Act II, Scene VIII of the Italian opera, L'elisir d'amore (The Elixir of Love) by Gaetano Donizetti. It is sung by Nemorino (tenor) when he finds that the love potion he bought to win his dream ladys heart, Adina, works. Nemorino is in love with Adina, but she isn't interested in a relationship with an innocent, rustic man. To win her heart, Nemorino buys a love potion with all the money he has in his pocket. The love potion is actually a cheap red wine sold by a traveling con man. But when he sees Adina weeping, he knows that she has fallen in love with him and the Elixir works. Anatoliy Solovyanenko "Di Quella Pira" Il Trovatore

Di quella pira is a popular tenor aria (or more specifically cabaletta) sung by Manrico in Act 3, Scene 2 of Giuseppe Verdi's opera, Il trovatore. In a chamber adjoining the chapel at Castellor, Leonora and Manrico vow their love for each other. After Manrico's aria Ah si, ben mio coll'essere ("Ah, yes, my love, in being yours"), they are about to take their marriage vows. However, Ruiz, Manrico's comrade, suddenly returns to report that Manrico's mother Azucena is to be burned at the stake. Manrico calls together his soldiers and sings of how they will save Azucena from death: "Di quella pira l'orrendo foco tutte le fibre m'arse avvampò!..." ("The horrible blaze of that pyre burns, enflames all of my being!...") Il trovatore (The Troubadour) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Leone Emanuele Bardare and Salvadore Cammarano, based on the play El Trovador by Antonio García Gutiérrez. It was first performed at the Teatro Apollo, Rome on 19 January 1853.

Anatoliy Solovyanenko "E lucevan le stelle" Tosca

E lucevan le stelle is the romanza of Mario Cavaradossi in the 3rd act of Tosca, the opera composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is sung by Tosca's lover, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, while waiting for his coming execution.
