Nicaragua: An unfinished revolution - 17 Jul 09 - Part 1

On July 19, 1979, the Sandinista revolution removed what many considered to be one of Latin America's most brutal dictatorships. Thirty years later, and with the Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega once again in power, Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman visited Nicaragua and found that many of the revolution's promises have remained unfulfilled.

Kris Kristofferson - Sandinista (live, 2010)

Kris Kristofferson Sandinista (live 2010) live from San Sebastian, Spain, July 25 Kris's Spanish words: Sandinista, the forces of darkness can never extinguish the purity of your revolutionary flame. With their terror and their lies, with their money and their machines, the burning love in your heart, the liberty in your eyes are stronger forces than the weapons of war. The song is on Kris's album "Third World Warrior" (1990) which is available with the CD "Kris Kristofferson - The Country Collection" www.amazon.com www.amazon.co.uk www.amazon.de On the album Mal Sacate is lovely fading into Sandinista - it's really like a beautiful hymn... You can watch Mal Sacate here www.youtube.com At a concert in Mexico in the late 1980s Kris spoke to members of a Nicaraguan band and one of them suggested he go there himself to see what was happening. Kris first visited Nicaragua in 1987. He explained his reason for going there was to show how it "means a lot to those people to know that not all Americans want to kill them". In 1988 he initiated contact with Brian Willson, a peace activist and dissident who had lost both legs during a protest in Concord, CA the previous year by putting himself in the path of a train carrying military weapons bound for Central America. The same year they travelled to Nicaragua together, being met at the airport by president Daniel Ortega. Willson had hoped that other celebs might lend support to his visit, but Kris was the only one prepared to. On the ...

The clash - Police on my back (¡Sandinista! 1980)

The Clash were an English punk rock band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk. Along with punk, their music incorporated elements of reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap, dance, and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, The Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simonon (bass guitar, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals) and Nicky "Topper" Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones's departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in early 1986. Sandinista! is the fourth studio album by the English punk rock band The Clash. It was released on 12 December 1980 as a triple album containing 36 tracks, with 6 songs on each side. Anticipating the "world music" trend of the 1980s, it features reggae, jazz, mock gospel, rockabilly, folk, dub, rhythm and blues, calypso, and rap. For the first time, the band's traditional songwriting credits of Strummer/Jones were replaced by a generic credit to "The Clash", and the band cut the album royalties, in order to release the 3-LP at a low price. The title comes from the Nicaraguan socialist political party, the Sandinistas, and its catalogue number, refers to the acronym for Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional.
