The Gun Markets of Pakistan

Airing 1/25 "Taliban in Pakistan" on VBS.TV, the follow-up to the epic documentary Gun Markets of Pakistan. In 2006, Suroosh Alvi was one of a handful of journalists who was able to get into the massive guns market in Pakistan's tribal areas -- home base for the Taliban since the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. He returned to Pakistan this month and found the entire country was a "powder keg ready to explode."

See Part 2: vice.com VICE News host Suroosh Alvi discusses the effect of the West Bank Wall on Palestinian travel. VBS: How does the wall interfere with life inside its perimeter? Suroosh Alvi: Basically what's happening is the Israeli government is controlling the movement of the Palestinians. They're not allowed into Israel and their movement is even restricted within the West Bank. You never know what roads you're going to have to take to get from point A to point B because they're always moving things around, putting up blockades so you have to go onto these rural routes strewn with rubble. And this is all done without any sort of advanced warning? Yes. We were trying to drive from Emad's house to Bethlehem and it took us hours to get there. You'd be going along then all of a sudden there'd be a roadblock and you'd have to turn left, then you'd hit another one and have to turn right and go around right by where you originally were. It's extremely confusing—the whole time we were driving, we kept having to pull over and get new directions from other Palestinians. Having blockades at the border at least makes sense—why do they need to close off roads within Palestinian territory? Because there are so many Israeli settlements everywhere and they have to have highways running straight from the settlements to Israel proper for the settlers to get back and forth. And so now Palestinians are forbidden from going on these beautiful, nice highways that are going straight ...
