How To Dismantle A Wooden Pallet

A well rehearsed method to dismantle a pallet. It was Gerrit Reitvild who first deconstructed a transport crate to reassemble it into furniture that was both affordable and could be easily constructed from the individual pieces. In that sprit this video is made to reveal a method to dismantle this wooden beast of burden, the pallet. Like a donkey it has to be broken-in and for the task you will need a lump mallet, a claw hammer and a prybar. You will also need a scrap piece of wood, MDF or ply to use as a cushion to avoided damaging the wood when knocking pieces apart. Begin by turning the pallet upside down and knocking the chocks (wooden supporting blocks) out. The technique here is to distribute your blows with the lump mallet between the three blocks and gradually knock the section apart. Once you have done this to all three supporting sections place these pieces underneath the main body of the pallet. Using the claw hammer knock the revealed nails through their holes. Try to get all nails out of the wood otherwise you risk damaging your tools when using the pieces for your next project. Knocking nails out of wood is a skill. A skill albeit that you most likely will never write on your CV but one that nonetheless require you to be patient and accurate. Use the lump mallet to rock the nails into shape if they bend. WARNING: How to find and use the proper 'heat-treated' wood pallet; do not use 'chemically' treated wood pallets for indoor furniture, children's rooms, composting or for food growing; herbs, strawberries, etc... Use only 'untreated' or 'heat' treated pallets. First, Methyl Bromide (insecticide on wood shipping crates) was phased out as a fumitory chemical in 1995, but some of these pallets may still be around, so look for the symbol on crates. Most pallets in the USA have been heat-treated for foreign pests, the symbol is ``IPPC`` and are safe. Pallets used in foreign countries may still contain insecticides. Architects Suzan Wines and Azin Valy were trying to come up with the ideal building material for refugee housing in Kosovo. It should be recycled, recyclable, affordable, plentiful. They thought about bottles and tires. Then Wines tripped over a shipping pallet on the way home from work one night and something clicked. Using only shipping pallets, or skids, the I-Beam architects created a tiny, modular home design. They also created "IKEA-style assembly instructions" so anyone- even those without building experience- could build their own home, using only hand tools (hammer, nails, "a crowbar is helpful"). Instant Greenhouse Pallet Wrap Thermal Aqua Storage

This is not the prettiest greenhouse BUT it does work very well. I have tested standard pallet wrap for UV and it has surpassed 2 years without a problem. The wrap clings and if wrapped properly, it will not separate in winds exceeding 35 miles per hour. Maximum temperature difference with a 4x8 ft absorber and a single barrel of water plus 3 additional back mirrors is 30f. The goal for the winter time is to allow natural light to penetrate the south side and redirect sunlight missing the greenhouse from the north side. Mirror arrays can be set for different times of the day with or without tracking. The 50 gallon water barrels act as heat retention ponds storing heat during the day to radiate at night time. The optimal solution would be to use an exterior black hose system circulating water to build heat during the day. The larger the amount of hose and number of barrels determine how much heat can be stored. I has consulted these systems with success to a few northern growers and also animal rescues for winterizing shelters.
