Putin's party hits low ahead of Russian elections

United Russia, the ruling party led by former president and current Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, is battling its lowest-ever poll numbers heading into a parliamentary election on Sunday. Recent public events have echoed the polls: A party deputy was recently heckled at a music concert, and Putin himself was booed at a boxing match. But many party members are not yet ready to say the winds are changing. Dmitry Polikanov, a member of parliament, told Al Jazeera he believed the party would win 56 to 58 per cent of the vote. The party has also bent campaign rules to boost its support, running a huge advertising scheme that appears nearly identical to state-run posters urging citizens to vote. Meanwhile, opposition figures lamenting Russia's sense of malaise and its "ruined" industry and agriculture await a changing of the guard. Al Jazeera's Robin Forestier-Walker reports from Moscow.

Russia votes in presidential election

Vladimir Putin, the Russian prime minister, has cast his vote in an election that he is widely expected to win. Putin was first elected Russia's president from 2000 to 2008, but was barred by the constitution from standing for a third consecutive term. He has spent the last four years as prime minister, under President Dmitri Medvedev, but is now expected to return to the top job. This election is being held against a backdrop of many anti-Putin protests, sparked by allegations of widespread fraud during December's parliamentary elections. Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports from Moscow, the Russian capital.

Russian election: Vladimir Putin reelected president

nma.tv Russians reelected Vladimir Putin president in a general election on Sunday, reinstalling him in the Kremlin after a four-year stint as Prime Minister. A tearful Putin milked a crowd of supporters following his win, yelling "Glory to Russia" while welling up with tears. Putin will take back the presidency from Dmitry Medvedev for the first of what he hopes will be two six-year terms that will see him in office until 2024. But Putin will have to tackle an increasingly emboldened opposition and a Russian middle class unsettled still upset over massive vote rigging in December's parliamentary election. A growing protest movement sprung up in the wake of December's poll and has continued ever since, with numerous anti-Putin street protests. In what was seen as a concession to the opposition, incumbent President Dmitry Medvedev announced a review into the sentence of Putin's jailed former rival and oil magnate Mikhail Khodorkovsky. The protesters were out again on Monday following his reelection, but were met by a strong security presence that saw hundreds arrested.
