Putin's Russia - Russia

March 2004 The Beslan crisis has raised serious questions about Putin's leadership. We bring back a report examining life in Putin's Russia. In most of Russia, democracy is a dirty word. "Under the Soviets we lived better than we live today," complains former collective farmer Valentina. She blames Yeltsin's Western-inspired policies for creating such an unequal society and considers Putin to be the lesser of two evils. Putin may have won 71% of the vote in the last elections but his is a grudging mandate. "Only 15% are sure that Putin is a successful leader," comments Lilya Shevtsova, author of 'Putin's Russia.' "They vote for him because they don't see a viable alternative." And there are plenty of Russians who disagree with his authoritarian style. As one of his rivals laments: "Independent media's been destroyed, freedom of speech has been trampled on -- We have returned to the times of Brezhnez -- only worse." Saakashvili comments on Putin`s xenophobic statements

Saakashvili comments on Putin`s xenophobic statements Georgian president has commented on the xenophobic statements made by Russian Prime Minister. Saakashvili said with his comments regarding famous writer Boris Akunin`s ethic origins, Vladimir Putin has actually acknowledged that he has problems with Georgia. "If someone still continues asserting that Putisn has problems with the Georgian government, the Russian prime minister has poured cold water on him. When he said Akunin is fighting him because he`s Georgian he confirmed that he has problems with Georgia, the Georgian nation and not any government of Georgia. We already knew that, but this man also said this himself. Today he said the same thing about Caucasians", Saakashvili said.

Putin`s words in focus of Western media

Putin`s words in focus of Western media The statements made by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at his meeting with Media are in the focus of Western media. New agency France Press has emphasized the formation of a new non-political organization by famous Russian public figures, writers and journalist, which aims to control presidential elections. Boris Akunin, Georgian by origin, is among them. The author of the article disapproves the fact that Putin emphasized the Georgian origin of the writer and explained his criticism towards the August Georgia-Russia War to his ethnicity. France Press has also underlined Putin`s criticism towards impartial media sources operating in Russia, exemplifying his statements about the work of the Echo Moskvy, accusing him of supporting foreign interests. `Venediktov admitted that Wednesday`s jab might have been Putin`s most public attack at the radio station yet but noted the strongman prime minister had also criticized the station in the past. "If we are talking about semi-public things the prime minister expressed to me his extreme displeasure over Echo of Moscow`s editorial policies during the war with Georgia," he said, referring to Moscow`s five-day war with Tbilisi in 2008,` the article says. Putin's Media War - Russia

March 2005 Putin's censorship of the media has led to the re-emergence of Soviet style propaganda in Russia. Journalists telling the truth are literally risking their lives. "I've written my will. I'm getting my children used to the idea that at any moment they might be left without me," states journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Her reports from Chechnya have constantly contradicted the official line, making her deeply unpopular with the Kremlin. "Since Vladimir Putin became President, propaganda and censorship have re-emerged," complains editor Oleg Panfilov. During the Beslan siege, Russian networks were banned from mentioning the hostage takers demands and ordered to claim they were international terrorists not Chechen rebels. In the wake of Beslan, even tighter controls are planned. The FSB are lobbying for a complete ban on reporting terrorist acts. "Then, if people are killed, there'd be no impact, no stress, no outcome favourable to the terrorists," explains Pavel Pozhigaylo, Deputy Head of the Information Policy Committee.
