Roma communities in Romania (CNN production)

During June 2010, Policy Center for Roma and Minorities and director Alexander Nanau accompanied a CNN team to document and capture the situation of very poor Roma communities in Romania. These images were shoot in Ferentari (a Roma dominated ghetto area in Bucharest) and in Ocolna (a Roma inhabited village near Craiova in the south of Romania) where people struggle to make a living on less than one dollar per day. Depicting tragic life stories of these people, the clip on living conditions raises serious concerns regarding the public authorities failure to efficiently tackle Roma marginalization.

Riz Khan - Expelling the Roma

France claims that its illegal Roma communities (often called gypsies or travellers) are a serious threat to social order. Nicolas Sarkozy ordered the dismantling of illegal camps of travelling people and Roma across France, as part of a "war" on crime and urban violence. Will Sarkozy's plan to deport the Roma actually serve the public interest, or is it an attempt to shift the focus off the country's political and economic challenges?

Roma living in fear in Hungary

Roma people have reason to fear for their lives: seven adults and two children died in 49 attacks on Roma communities in Hungary between January 2008 and April 2011, according to the European Roma Rights Centre. "The Hungarian Civil Liberties Union (HCLU) reported the four most serious incidents during the patrols to police. One involved a woman giving birth prematurely after being harassed by vigilantes with using racially abusive slogans. No charges have yet been brought against the militiamen, though a Roma man was jailed for two years after a fight with the vigilantes; a further five Roma are awaiting trial over the same incident."

Supporting Roma Community in Albania

One UN Joint Programme, "Empowering Vulnerable Local Communities of Albania" is implemented by UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA and UNV in partnership with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. The programme assists the most marginalized Roma and Egyptian communities and contributes to their social integration while valuing their diversity. It supports the participation of vulnerable communities in local decision-making - through identification of priorities and preparation of Community Development Plans and implementation of development works. Assistance goes to enable the targeted communities to access their rights, particularly access to public services-- through civil registration; community policing; establishing and strengthening network of Roma mediators in areas of health, education, and child protection as well facilitating vocational training and employment. The project is implemented in four Albanian regions: Tirana, Elbasan, Fier and Durres and it is funded by the UN Trust Fund for Human Security with the support of the Government of Japan.
