Tribute to Arthur Rackham

Arthur Rackham. Born Sept. 19, 1867, London, Died Sept. 6, 1939, Limpsfield, British artist and illustrator. While a staff artist for a London newspaper, he also began illustrating books. He became skillful using the new halftone process, and his highly detailed drawings revealed a unique imagination. He achieved renown with a 1900 edition of Grimm's Fairy Tales, and his illustrations for Rip Van Winkle (1905) brought him recognition in America as well. Altogether he illustrated more than 60 books, including classics of children's literature as well as works by William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, John Milton, Richard Wagner, and Edgar Allan Poe. Comus (Illustrated by Arthur Rackham)

'Comus' (a masque in honour of chastity, written by John Milton in 1634) was illustrated by Arthur Rackham in 1922. In Greek mythology, Comus or Komos is the god of festivity, revels and nocturnal dalliances. He is a son and a cup-bearer of the god Bacchus. Comus represents anarchy and chaos. His mythology occurs in the later times of antiquity. During his festivals in Ancient Greece, men and women exchanged clothes. He was depicted as a young man on the point of unconsciousness from drink. He had a wreath of flowers on his head and carried a torch that was in the process of being dropped. Unlike the purely carnal Pan or purely intoxicated Bacchus, Comus was a god of excess. Music by Antonio Vivaldi, 'Inverno I. Allegro non molto'

Kammarheit meets Art of Arthur Rackham

Another tribute to an artist I enjoy very much and this one goes to Arthur Rackham who painted many illustrations to children's books, operas of Wagner, the Arthur legend and where i came across him books with novellas by Edgar Allan Poe. His images there really enhanced the already creepy atmosphere of Poe's stories and i loved his art very much. Music is by ambient project Kammarheit performing the song "The Starwheel (clockwise)" which really suits the moody images.
