Sharon Presley on Libertarian Feminism

"Many libertarian men are fairly ignorant about women's issues. Some of them are outright hostile to feminism because they've never bothered to find out what it is," says Sharon Presley, Ph.D. Presley is a founding figure in the libertarian movement and author of the book, Standing Up to Experts and Authorities. She sat down with Reason.com's managing editor, Tim Cavanaugh to discuss libertarian feminism and what libertarianism looks like in 2012. Shot by Tracy Oppenheimer and Paul Detrick. Robert Zubrin: Radical Environmentalists and Other Merchants of Despair

"We have never been in danger of running out of resources," says Dr. Robert Zubrin, "but we have encountered considerable dangers from people who say we are running out of resources and who say that human activities need to be constrained." In his latest book, Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism, Zubrin documents the history of dystopian environmentalism, from economic impairment inflicted by current global warming policies to the Malthusian concern over population growth. "Just think how much poorer we would be today if the world would have had half as many people in the 19th century as it actually did. You can get rid of Thomas Edison or Louis Pasteur, take your pick." Zubrin sat down with Reason Magazine Editor Matt Welch to discuss his book, the difference between practical and ideological environmentalism, and how US foreign aid policy encourages population control. Reason Foundation Co-Founder Bob Poole on Ayn Rand

Robert W. Poole Jr. was one of the founders of Reason Enterprises, which began publishing Reason with its January 1971 issue (the magazine had started in 1968, under the direction of Lanny Friedlander). He co-founded the nonprofit Reason Foundation in 1978 with Manny Klausner and Tibor Machan and has held many titles with the magazine, including editor, managing editor, executive editor, editor-in-chief, and publisher. He remains on the board of the Reason Foundation today and is the Searle Freedom Trust Transportation Fellow and Director of Transportation Policy. "Rand really inspired a lot of people who otherwise might have become conservatives, like me," says Poole. "If you go back and look at surveys that were done of libertarians in the 1960s, '70s, and even the '80s, and asked what single book or thought leader most inspired you to become a libertarian, it was always Rand by a large large majority—always a plurality and usually a majority." Approximately six minutes. Interview by Michael C. Moynihan, camera by Dan Hayes, and editing by Hawk Jensen. This is part of the Reason.tv series Radicals For Capitalism: Celebrating the Ideas of Ayn Rand. Why Obama's Stimulus Failed: A Case Study of Silver Spring, Maryland

High, persistent unemployment and a sluggish economy underscore what all but the most-dedicated supporters of Barack Obama know to be true: The president's 2009 stimulus program was a massively expensive bust. Understanding why the stimulus failed is an important step in understanding how the government can—and cannot—goose economic recovery. To get a better sense of how and where the stimulus went wrong, Reason.tv focused on Silver Spring, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC, that's home to a large number of government contractors and other recipients of money earmarked for the sorts of "shovel ready" projects that were going to bring the economy back to life. President Obama's top economic advisor Larry Summers laid out ground rules for how stimulus dollars should be spent: The funds must be "targeted" at resources idled by the recession, the interventions must be "temporary," and they needed to "timely," or injected quickly into the economy. None of that turned out to be true. "Even if you were to believe that government spending can trigger economic growth," says Veronique de Rugy, Reason columnist and senior research fellow at the Mercatus Center, "the money is never spent in a way that's consistent with the conditions laid out by the Keynesians for it to be efficient." Reason.tv identified four basic ways in which the stimulus was doomed almost before it was put into operation. The Truth about Public Servants: A presentation by Reason Foundation's Adrian Moore

"The problem [with government workers] really is the unions," says Adrian Moore, who is Reason Foundation's vice president for policy. "These are organizations whose mission is to oppose the taxpayers and get a better deal for their members. That's their mission." At Reason Weekend, the annual donor event held by Reason Foundation (the nonprofit that publishes this website), Moore challenged the misperception that public-sector workers are underpaid. In fact, government workers do better than their private sector counterparts in terms of wages, benefits, pensions, and job stability. And the size of the government workforce expands, Moore argued, whether the economy is up or down, a phenomenon he calls "fair weather Keynesianism." Approximately 33 minutes. "What's missing education reform is courage": Former DC Mayor Adrian Fenty

"What's missing in education reform is courage," says former Washington, DC Mayor Adrian Fenty. "We want to end this ridiculous system where people get automatic tenure and jobs for life no matter what their performance is." Fenty was speaking last week at an event during National School Choice Week (NSCW), a non-partisan coalition of educators, activists, and parents seeking to increase options for all forms of educational choice. Go to schoolchoiceweek.org for more information. Reason Foundation was a co-sponsor of NSCW and Reason supporter Judd Weiss held a reception for Fenty, Reason's education expert Lisa Snell, and others to discuss the aims of the choice movement. Reason.tv attended the Students For Liberty International Conference 2011 at the George Washington University in Washington, February 18th to the 20th. Students For Liberty is a nonprofit organization geared toward aiding libertarian student groups on campus and abroad. Formed in 2008, SFL has grown from thirty students to over 500 and begun to gain the media attention of Fox Business Network and Stossel. Reason.tv sat down with Co-founders Alexander McCobin and Sloane Frost, Executive Board Member Ankur Chawla, Communication Manager Blayne Bennett and SFL Student of the Year 2011 Michelle Fields to talk about the organization's exceptional growth and if it is connected to a increased interest in libertarianism in the general public. Reason.tv also interviewed the students attending about why they are libertarian and what they hoped to take away from the conference. Approximately 3 minutes long. Shot and edited by Josh Swain. Interviews by Swain with assistance from Reason Foundation research assistant Harris Kenny and Communication Specialist Katie Hooks. John Stossel on the Successes of Freedom in Education

"It shows how horrible things were, that it took this long for this eminently sensible thing to happen" said Fox Business host John Stossel of school choice in education. Stossel made a speech at Reason Weekend 2012, Reason Foundation's annual donor event, about the successes of freedom in education. He talked about trying to update his 20/20 special, "Stupid in America," and not being able to do it, visiting Harlem schools full of kids ready to learn and why libertarians oppose a single payer system in health-care but cheer it in education. About 3:00 minutes. Filmed by Joshua Swain and Anthony Fisher. Edited by Paul Detrick.
