Maple Spring: 'Canada vs totalitarian govt crackdown'

Nearly 700 arrests have been made overnight in Canada, during the latest protest in Quebec against a huge planned rise in student tuition fees. The rallies have been on-going for more than 100 days. Police in Montreal dispersed unsanctioned protests and arrested 518 demonstrators on Wednesday night. The arrests were also made in Quebec City, where some 170 were detained, and in Sherbrooke. Totalitarian Lesson for Czech Students

This morning is a bit unusual for students from Policka High School, who came to school thinking how this day would be. The students experience one day of totalitarian rule in order to better understand how difficult life was under communist rule. Even though partly in a light way the teacher expect them to get a feel for it. Entering school, there are some prohibitions like no jeans, t-shirts, or even make up for girls, while boys can't have long hair. Apart from the attire, the behavior of a teachers and students, way of teaching, learning materials and even decoration in the hallways is all different. [Miloslav Svoboda, High School Principal]: Our goal is to show the past as real as possible with objectivity. And we will know what the outcome will be at the end of the day. History teacher Jana Galgociova is one of the many people behind the project. [Jana Galgociova, History Teacher]: My aim was to give this experience to students. They took hold of this day with a bit of extravagance, which is absolutely normal for their age, but I know that this gives them room to think about how it was before. Mass Games of Arirang (North Korean mass performances) 1/2

Mass games or mass gymnastics are a form of performing arts or gymnastics in which large numbers of performers take part in a highly regimented performance that emphasizes group dynamics rather than individual prowess. Because of the vast scale of the performance, with often tens of thousands of performers, mass games are performed in stadiums, often accompanied by a background of card-turners occupying the seats on the opposite side from the viewers. Mass games are typically used to emphasize themes of political propaganda. They developed alongside 19th century nationalist movements, particularly the Czech Sokol movement, as they embodied youth, strength, militarism, and unity.[citation needed] Today, mass games are regularly performed only in North Korea, where they take place to celebrate national holidays such as the birthdays of rulers Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. In recent years, they have been the main attraction of the Arirang Festival in Pyongyang. The 2004 film A State of Mind details the training of two young girls from Pyongyang who perform in the mass games.
