Vivaldi's concertos for flute and recorder are some of the most intriguing and virtuosic pieces of the 18th century concerto repertory: Vivaldi creates a hybrid style in which the recorder and flute parts borrow just enough idiomatic material from the violin to create a distinctly original sound, and he combines this sound with highly original--and difficult--music for the the winds. The airy string parts are light enough to let the sound of the recorder shine through, and include just a touch of rhythmic diversity to contrast with the rapid figuration of the solo part. |
