Tarika: Sulawesi

The album Soul Makassar (released in 2001) by Madagascar's Tarika was a special project where their leader Hanitra Rasoanaivo travelled to Sulawesi in Indonesia looking for the ancestral origins of the Malagasy people. It was recorded in London, Bandung and Jakarta with Indonesian musicians guesting. From Hanitra's album notes: "I wrote this song on the second day after I arrived on the island of Sulawesi. From my hotel room window every evening I could see the red sun setting between the light blue sky and the dark blue sea. I was taken on an imaginary trip by the boat of Tanaberu called Amanangapa which supposedly left the south coast of Sulawesi to go to Madagascar. I saw the pinisi, the outrigger canoes crossing the sea in front of me. I felt like I had been taken back home after many years of being lost. I was in a new Antananarivo, an Antananarivo where there was nobody else but my own tribe. The Makassar people say that I am from the Takalar tribe! There was not even one vazaha (white person) in sight at that time. I felt at home."

Tarika: Tsy Kivy

A live version of Tsy Kivy from the 1997 album Son Egal by Madagascar's Tarika. Son Egal, produced by Simon Emmerson, was one of the most successful world music albums of the 1990s, topping the world music charts in Europe and the USA and picked by all the world music guides as THE most important album from Madagascar. Until it came out, Tarika had played mostly abroad - touring with big success on both sides of the Atlantic - but this album brought big new respect for roots music at home and they quickly became one of the top bands in the country. Son Egal was a special project by Tarika's leader Hanitra Rasoanaivo marking the 100th anniversary of the exile of the last Merina queen of Madagascar by the colonising French, and the 50th of a major uprising against them in which many Malagasy were killed by France's African troops. It was also a reconciliation with the Senegalese, who had subsequently been demonised in Madagascar, and the album had Senegalese musicians from Baaba Maal's band guesting on it.

Putumayo - Tarika - Avelo!

The track "Avelo (Ghost)" is taken from the album "Putumayo Presents - Women Of Spirit" resp. Tarika's 2nd album "Son Egal" (produced by Simon Emmerson (Baaba Maal/Afro Celts) and Martin Russell, Release Date: January 1997, Label: Green Linnet Records/Xenophile). This album is another example for why Putumayo is a name that all world music enthusiasts should be familiar with. Listen & Enjoy to one of the most beautiful tracks I know. "Tarika" means "group" in Malagasy, the language of Madagascar. Their second album received rave reviews in Europe and the USA, shot to the top of the European World Music Charts and spent an unprecedented 8 weeks at No.1 (15 weeks in the top 5) on the CMJ World Music Chart in the USA. They were nominated in the 1997 Kora All-African Music Awards and won the AFIM Indie Award for Contempory World Music Album in the USA. In 2001, Time magazine named Tarika as one of its "10 best bands on planet Earth." Tarika has played an integral part in introducing Madagascar's music to the rest of the world since the mid 1990s. The women of Tarika show us that the female voice cannot be silenced and that music is a powerful form of expression - it is an educational tool that should and must be wielded for the good of our planet. Lyrics (translation): www.frootsmag.com "Oi! Can't you hear that? Can't you hear the ghost's song? It's a pleading sound, a sound of sadness Please listen, please listen It tells the story of traitors Who traded their country for ...

Tarika: Ankoay

A video filmed in Madagascar for "Ankoay" from Tarika's 1994 debut album "Balance". For the previous couple of years, Tarika's leader Hanitra Rasoanaivo and her sister Noro Raharimalala had fronted the band Tarika Sammy. When that line-up split up at the end of 1993, Hanitra set about finding new musicians and Tarika were born, going on to become Madagascar's most successful musical export of the 1990s and eventually one of the top bands in the country. Balance was recorded very soon after the new line-up formed, as they embarked on their first major tour of Europe and the USA. Ankoay was a song about a rare species of bird which was getting a lot of international attention. It contrasts this with the little help that poor Malagasy people were getting, challenging the priorities of the then corrupt government and asking if you have to become an endangered species before anybody notices you. That definitely applied to people playing local traditionally based music in Madagascar at the time too, something that Tarika succeeded in changing.

Tarika Sammy: Rabeza

This early line-up of Tarika Sammy was fronted by Hanitra Rasoanaivo and her sister Noro Raharimalala, along with Sammy (Samoela Andriamalalaharijaona) - who has had many different groups of this name over the past 25 years - and his cousin Tiana (Solomon Ratianarinaivo). The song comes from their 1992 debut album Fanafody (medicine), recorded in London with the 3 Mustaphas 3 rhythm section as they embarked on their first international tour and soon gained great acclaim. After this line-up split at the end of 1993, Hanitra, along with Noro, went on to lead Tarika who soon became Madagascar's most successful musical export of the 1990s and eventually huge stars back home.
