The leaders were arriving in Russia to commemorate a World War II anniversary. Polish Presidnet Lech Kaczynski and his wife were killed in plane crash, when his TU-154, carrying an official Polish delegation, crashed in Smolensk Region, On board the plane were former Polish president-in-exile Ryszard Kaczorowski; the deputy speaker of Poland's parliament, Jerzy Szmajdzin'ski; the head of the president's chancellery, Wladyslaw Stasiak; and the head of the National Security Bureau, Aleksander Szczygo. The group was on their way to Smolensk to visit the Katyn memorial site, for Polish officers murdered during World War II.
