First Soviet hydrogen bomb test (1953)

Date: 12/08/1953 | Type: Tower 30m | Yield: 400kt Joe-4 was the fifth Soviet nuclear test and demonstrated the use of fusion in a weaponizable design known as the Sloika or "Layer Cake" design. The device obtained nearly all of its yield from fission and was limited for practical purposes to yields of less than 1Mt. The RDS-6s warhead used a U-235 fissile core surrounded by alternating layers of lithium-6 deuteride spiked with tritium, and a uranium fusion tamper inside a high explosive implosion system. Though not a true thermonuclear weapon the USSR claimed it was, and in conjunction with the fact that it was air-deliverable caused considerable embarasment to the US. The US did not successfuly test a deliverable thermonuclear bomb untill 1954.

China First Atomic Bomb 1964 Test 596

China First Atomic Bomb 1964 596 is the codename of the People's Republic of China's first nuclear weapons test, detonated on October 16, 1964 at the Lop Nur test site. It was a uranium-235 implosion fission device and had a yield of 22 kilotons. With the test, China became the fifth nuclear power. History The People's Republic of China began developing nuclear weapons in the late 1950s with substantial Soviet assistance. The order for the Chinese nuclear weapons program, designated by the codename of "02", was given by Chairman Mao Zedong himself, who believed that without a nuclear weapon China would not be taken seriously as a world power. The events of the First Taiwan Strait Crisis of 1954-55 cemented Mao's belief that unless China had nuclear weapons of its own, it would constantly be under the threat of nuclear blackmail from the United States. Prior to 1960, direct Soviet military assistance had included the provision of advisors and a vast variety of equipment. Of the assistance provided, most significant to China's future strategic nuclear capability were an experimental nuclear reactor, facilities for processing uranium, a cyclotron, and some equipment for a gaseous diffusions plant. At one point the Soviet Union even agreed to supply a prototype nuclear weapon for analysis by the Chinese; this agreement was not, however, put into effect. When Sino-Soviet relations cooled in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Soviet Union withheld plans and data for an atomic ...

'US bombed Hiroshima to intimidate Soviets'

Japan's mourning the victims of the American Atomic bomb that was dropped on HiroSHEma 65 years ago. Around 140 thousand people were killed by the blast and sebsequent fallout. I spoke to Historian Jacques Pauwels who told me he believes that by bombing Hiroshima, the US was trying to intimidate the USSR

The Hiroshima Bombing

Hiroshima was the primary target of the first nuclear bombing mission on August 6, with Kokura and Nagasaki being alternative targets. August 6 was chosen because clouds had previously obscured the target. The 393d Bombardment Squadron B-29 Enola Gay, piloted and commanded by 509th Composite Group commander Colonel Paul Tibbets, was launched from North Field airbase on Tinian in the West Pacific, about six hours flight time from Japan. The Enola Gay (named after Colonel Tibbets' mother) was accompanied by two other B29s. The Great Artiste, commanded by Major Charles W. Sweeney, carried instrumentation; and a then-nameless aircraft later called Necessary Evil (the photography aircraft) was commanded by Captain George Marquardt. After leaving Tinian the aircraft made their way separately to Iwo Jima where they rendezvoused at 2440 meters (8000 ft) and set course for Japan. The aircraft arrived over the target in clear visibility at 9855 meters (32330 ft). During the journey, Navy Captain William Parsons had armed the bomb, which had been left unarmed to minimize the risks during takeoff. His assistant, 2nd Lt. Morris Jeppson, removed the safety devices 30 minutes before reaching the target area. The energy released was powerful enough to burn through clothing. The dark portions of the garments this victim wore at the time of the blast were emblazoned on to the flesh as scars. About an hour before the bombing, Japanese early warning radar detected the approach of some ...

The Physics Of A Nuclear Bomb

www.epicphysics.com A short video showing the physics involved in a nuclear bomb chain reaction. The bomb shown here uses the isotope Uranium 235. Bombs such as these were used in the 1950s and 60s, nowadays the bombs use plutonium and other isotopes which create much larger explosions. Thankfully, nuclear bombs are so powerful that they act as a deterrent and stop nations going to war with each other unless they both want to lose
