Kyrgyzstan to shut down US base

Russia Today: www.russiatoday.com February 4, 2009, 21:21 Kyrgyzstan to shut key NATO base The President of Kyrgyzstan has announced that the US military will have to leave the Manas Air Base near Bishkek. The facility is central to NATO operations in Afghanistan. The Kyrgyz government said the US wasn't prepared to pay an appropriate fee to use the base. Kyrgyzstan says US personnel will be leaving the air base within 180 days, after the deal is ratified by both sides. The country's parliament will vote on the president's decision on Friday. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation had been insisting on its closure since 2005. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev made the announcement in Moscow after he was promised a 2 billion dollar loan by the Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev. Initially, it was a question of one or two years, Bakiyev said. Eight years have passed. We have repeatedly raised the issue of economic compensation for the existence of the base in Kyrgyzstan with our American partners, but we have not been understood. The once-warm welcome has chilled after reports of fights between American soldiers and locals. In one incident, two women were run over in Bishkek by a vehicle driven by a US soldier. In another, a Kyrgyz citizen was shot dead by an American soldier who escaped prosecution due to immunity enjoyed by US military at the base. But Washington says it still hopes to continue using the Manas base as it is a major supply depot for NATO troops in Afghanistan. For US ...

19.02.09 - Kyrgyz Parliament to Vote on US Base Closure

BISHKEK, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Kyrgyzstan's parliament will vote on Thursday on closing a US air base in the Central Asian state, complicating Washington's efforts to supply its forces fighting in Afghanistan. Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiyev announced after talks with traditional ally Russia this month that he wanted to close the Manas air base outside the capital Bishkek because Washington had refused to pay more rent. Parliament is expected to support Bakiyev's decision because his Ak Zhol party dominates the assembly. US forces will then have six months to leave and find another staging post in a region where Washington vies for influence with Russia. Foreign Minister Kadyrbek Sarbayev said on Wednesday the impoverished former Soviet republic had not received any new proposals on the base from the United States. "There will be a parliament session tomorrow and this question will be settled," Sarbayev told the assembly. Ibragim Zhunusov, a parliament deputy, said: "Of course we will vote to cancel the agreement." Washington is looking for alternative supply routes to landlocked Afghanistan because routes through Pakistan have become increasingly vulnerable to militant attacks. Washington sent troops to Afghanistan after the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. They toppled the Taliban leadership for giving sanctuary to al Qaeda leaders responsible for the attacks. US President Barack Obama has ordered 17000 more troops to Afghanistan to tackle an intensifying ...

Uzbekistan hotel Karshi streaming

Hotels we've loved.. After 911 happened ABC sent us to Uzbekistan to cover the eminent war. We were to attempt to setup near a US airforce base and Special forces camp to go live the night the attack started. (Fat chance!) We ended up in a town called Karshi and found a hotel who doubled their rate to $2 per night when they heard we were "Americans". While we were waiting for the first attack I quickly got some shots of our accomodation!!
