Synteny mapped Human to Chimp. A quick look at the genes on the human Y chromosome and their homologues (as well as the lack of homologues) on the chimpanzee Y chromosome. Of course the question arises, if homology between species which are believed to be closely related is evidence for evolution then shouldn't the lack of homology between such species be evidence against evolution? Since humans and chimps are supposedly 98.5% similar (or 95% or whatever the percentage du jour happens to be) then how is it that so many genes have no homologues

Genome Tour - Y Chromosome (part 2)

Today we will be taking another look at the Y chromosome but from another perspective, from Chimp to Human. In the last video we compared Human to Chimp as we navigated homology and drew synteny lines from the genes on the Human Y chromosome to the homologous genes on the Chimpanzee Y chromosome and we found 14 human genes with no homologs in Chimp, several human genes with homologs on chromosomes other than the Chimpanzee Y chromosome and a substantial rearrangement of gene order between the two. In today's look we will be navigating from Chimp to Human in order to see what we missed last time; namely, genes that are on the CHIMP Y chrom which have no homologs on the Human Y chrom or elsewhere in the human genome. So, we are just turning it around to get the other half of the story.

3rd Order Mandelbrot - Search for the Lost Y Chromosome

This is a deep zoom on a third order mandelbrot employing a similar method to my "Ultimate Metaphase XX" video. Using the 3rd order Mandelbrot formula, everything has threefold symmetry rather than twofold. Therefore X shapes are not possible, but Ys are fair game. Also, due to the threefold symmetry, it is not possible to line anything up into strait rows as with the Xs. I like to call the formations Triwings. Firstly, zooming in in the crack of the Y causes omega (ω) shapes to form. Zooming inside of these ω formations results in the y chromosome shapes that the arms are full of.
