Yemen's 'untouchables' doubtful of change

Distinguished by their dark skin, Yemen's 'untouchables', who prefer to be called the marginalised ones, are a caste languishing at society's lowest social order. Named the Akhdam, an Arabic word for servant, they are confined to living in slums and working menial jobs, with no regard given to their basic human rights. Activists and community leaders are fighting to eliminate stereotypes and destroy the stigma that surrounds them. But there is a growing sense among many Akhdam that there is nothing they can do to put an end to the pervasive culture of discrimination and prejudice. In the second in a three-part series called "Breaking The Bonds," Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Sanaa.

Growing divide emerges in Yemen's south

The prospect of the forthcoming elections in Yemen is showing little sign of bringing unity to the country. The vote, along with the departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, form part of a Gulf-brokered deal designed to end a year of political upheaval. But there are renewed calls for a separate state in the country's south. Flags of South Yemen have been flying everywhere in the southern port city of Aden, a symbol of the South Yemen republic that joined the North in 1990. These protesters say they lost everything when they joined the union - their lands confiscated, rights denied and oil revenues taken away by the former government. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Aden.

Fragile peace in Yemen's capital

After a year of political upheaval and violence, and just two months since former president Ali Abdullah Saleh was replaced by his deputy, Yemenis in the capital Sanaa are cautiously returning to normal life. But implementation of a plan to remove members of the old government from power has proved problematic. Last week the dismissal of the head of the air force, Saleh's half-brother, led to a standoff at the airport, prompting the government to boost security forces with new troops. Although guns have mostly fallen silent and checkpoints are increasingly rare in Sanaa, fighters from various factions are still present on the streets, prompting fears over whether the fragile peace will hold. Al Jazeera's Jane Ferguson reports from Sanaa.

US drone raids in Yemen 'kill hundreds'

Covert US drone attacks on Yemen have increased this month to exceed the number of strikes on Pakistan's tribal areas, a Bureau of Investigative Journalism reports states. Up to 500 people, many of whom were civilians, have been killed since last May as part of the US drive to eliminate al-Qaeda from the Arabian Peninsula, according to the report. But, even after attacks with civilian casualties, there has been little reaction from the Yemeni government. Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba reports.

Yemen promised large Saudi donation

Saudi Arabia has pledged more than three billion dollars in aid to its neighbour Yemen. The announcement was made at a Friends of Yemen donors conference in Riyadh. It comes amid growing concern over the presence of al-Qaeda in the troubled state, while there's a desperate food shortage. A group of seven aid organisations says nearly half the population is facing starvation, as Jane Ferguson reports.
