Dec 1998 Child prostitution is rife in South Africa. It's a means of survival for impoverished township kids. Standing at the side of the road two young girls pass time playing like children, until their pimp tells them to shut-up. Their friend 14 year-old Lindy, lifts her top to let a potential client inspect her wares. "They like to suck them because I'm young" she says. Following a girl on a job we confront her white client. His flies undone, he denies he knew how old she was and demands his money back. A passer-by comes to help him out. "He was just following a call of nature," he says. Nobody knows how many children are working the streets. They stay here because of poverty, because there is no home to go back to and prostitution is all they can do to survive. Local police have given-up chasing the clients; "If you catch these people they won't give evidence [against clients] because tomorrow they will be back on the street." Instead social workers try to take the children into homes. The numbers they can help though is small, and most turn back to prostitution.

September 2009 Kenya's stunning beaches attract thousands of tourists each year but this tropical paradise hides a harrowing secret. Children as young as 6 are having to risk their lives and sell sex in order to survive. As night falls, Mombasas clubs fill up with European male tourists ogling teenage girls. The desperate teenagers wear high heels and pay a bribe to get in. The ultimate hope is Mzungu, a white man who will pay 5 times more for sex, than a Kenyan labourer can earn in a day. Three years ago a study by UNICEF reported that approximately 30% of the population of children aged between 12 and 18 were engaged in some form of sex work. Since this report, political violence and economic crisis has left 10 million Kenyans starving, forcing more youngsters into the sex trade. I started when I was 12. I could go into a nightclub and I could count 10 to 20 girls that were prostitutes, tells 14-year-old prostitute Leyla. I ask God, what I have done wrong? I am still a child and I am doing this. Dr Essam Ahmed works in Mombassas only sexual health clinic and explains there are many loopholes in the judicial system, it's very rare for a perpetrator to be jailed. And although the authorities say they are going to take strict action on those who are taking advantage of young children, the country fears any attack on its reputation could drive innocent tourists away.

In Bombay, children as young as 9 are bought for up to 60000 rupees, or US$2000, at auctions where foreigners bid against Indian men who believe sleeping with a virgin cures gonorrhea and syphilis. Child prostitution is more common here in India than any where else in the world. India has more than 1.3 million children in its sex-trade centers. The children come from relatively poorer areas and are trafficked to relatively richer ones. Karnataka, Andha Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu in India are considered "high supply zones" for women in prostitution. Bijapur, Belgaum and Kolhapur are common districts from which women migrate to the big cities, as part of an organised trafficking network. In India, 26 women, 27 girls, 71 boys and 13 children of unknown gender are held in Lilua Shelter, Calcutta; Sheha Shelter, Calcutta; Anando Ashram, Calcutta; Alipur Children's Home, Delhi; Nirmal Chaya Children's Home, Delhi; Prayas Observation House for Boys; Delhi; Tihar Jail, Delhi; Udavam Kalanger, Bangalore; Umar Khadi, Bangaore; Kishalay, West Bengal; Kuehbihar, West Bengal and Baharampur, West Bengal.

Child prostitution arrests - Strike Force Woodvale

Detectives have arrested a number of people following further investigations into the alleged prostitution of children in Sydney's south-west. Strike Force Woodvale, comprising detectives from Liverpool Local Area Command, was established in February 2012 to investigate alleged child prostitution in the Warwick Farm area. Subsequent inquiries by detectives resulted in the arrest of four people allegedly involved in the prostitution ring. Further arrests have not been ruled out by police.
