| The 13 year cicada, Brood XIX, is expected to appear in record numbers Spring 2011. In early May, they began to emerge from the ground at my home near Nashville. Expected to hang around for a month or so, they will most certainly be a nuisance for all outdoor activities. Just based on this footage of their initial emergence from a 13 year hibernation, I believe the predictions of overwhelming numbers of these insects are going to be true. During the mating process, their loud buzzing and droning noises will be quite annoying, in particular due to the large masses expected. Cicadas are not harmful to humans. After the mating process, female cicidas can cause damage to young trees and plants as they cut the branches and lay eggs.
