Afghan capital Kabul hit by multiple blasts, gun attacks

Gunfire followed by several explosions rocked Kabul on Sunday afternoon, in what appeared to be a coordinated attack in areas of the Afghan capital. Explosions were first heard in an area near major Western embassies and a major NATO military camp, usually a heavily secured area of the city. Soon after there was shooting near the Parliament and reports of explosions elsewhere in Kabul. In the upscale residential neighborhood of Wazir Akbar Khan, police rushed past a supermarket near the road that led to the German Embassy and Camp Eggers, a major NATO camp that includes many of the top officials that run the NATO training mission. Several Western countries, including Britain and the United States, have their embassies in the area. Several blasts that sounded like bombs were followed by explosions from several rockets in the area. Sirens sounded at nearby embassies warning people to "duck and cover and get away from the windows." With each explosion windows shook in nearby houses. Smoke could be seen rising from some buildings, and witnesses told Reuters that smoke appeared to be billowing from the German embassy. An Associated Press reporter in Kabul said militants who had staked out positions in a tall building were firing rockets in different directions, though it was unclear what they were targeting.

The much-predicted Taliban spring offensive began Sunday as the armed outfit launched multiple suicide attacks and gun shots in several Afghan cities including the fortified capital city Kabul. A group of insurgents including some suicide bombers, according to police and eye witnesses, sneaked into a luxury hotel named Kabul Star in the embassy area which was also located next to a United Nations (UN) office and some government institutes. In a statement, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi insisted that two or three terrorists entered a building in the 10th precinct and two more terrorists entered a building in the 7th precinct to disrupt law and order, saying police have beefed up to eliminate the attackers. Sediqi said that two attackers have been killed. Kabul police said two would-be suicide bombers were arrested. All the roads leading to Kabul city have been blocked by police and all streets are deserted, an eyewitness Farukh Shah said police do not allow any pedestrian to walk on streets. Shortly, Zabihullah Mujahid who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit, in talks with media via telephone from unknown location, claimed responsibility for the multiple attacks, saying the Taliban had launched "Spring Offensive" and targeted government interests in Kabul, Logar, Nangarhar and Paktia provinces inflicting huge casualties.
