Exposing ALEC's Corporate Influence On State Government

Laws that put more people in prison might seem like a good thing if you're for law and order. But what if you found those laws had been passed so private prisons would have more people to incarcerate and therefor make more money? That's one of the allegations laid out by a coalition of groups in Arizona who are calling attention to what the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) is doing to undermine democracy in America. The groups say ALEC takes millions of dollars from corporations and uses it to get state legislatures to do their bidding, passing laws that do everything from put more people in prison to disenfranchising voters. Former State Representative John A. Loredo introduces the speakers. Speakers at the event outside the Arizona state capitol in Phoenix include members of Common Cause, People For The American Way, Center for Media and Democracy, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the Arizona AFL-CIO, and the Office and Professional Employees International Union

Who elected ALEC?

A few times a year, ALEC gathers lawmakers, corporate CEOs, and lobbyists together in the same high-end resort-hotel ballrooms to present to the elected officials model legislation written by ALEC and voted on by the corporations. If the corporations approve, that legislation then gets carried back to state legislatures - or even the US Congress - by the lawmakers in attendance, who submit it as new laws. And it's long been speculated - because identical laws keep popping up in state after state - that Republican lawmakers who attend ALEC conferences are taking their orders directly from ALEC - and therefore legislation dealing with everything from Voter ID laws, to harsher prison sentences for drug offenders, to dismantling EPA regulation have their roots in ALEC. Now there's proof..

Rachel Burgin (R) proposed a resolution with the goal of cutting federal corporate taxes but she accidentally left in a portion written by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a group primarily funded by large corporations. ALEC = Obvious and Organized Corruption

Via The New York Times: "...Most of the attention has focused on ALEC's role in creating model bills, drafted by lobbyists and lawmakers, that broadly advance a pro-business, socially conservative agenda. But a review of internal ALEC documents shows that this is only one facet of a sophisticated operation for shaping public policy at a state-by-state level. The records offer a glimpse of how special interests effectively turn ALEC's lawmaker members into stealth lobbyists, providing them with talking points, signaling how they should vote and collaborating on bills affecting hundreds of issues like school vouchers and tobacco taxes. The documents — hundreds of pages of minutes of private meetings, member e-mail alerts and correspondence — were obtained by the watchdog group Common Cause and shared with The New York Times...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. * Read more from Mike Mcintire: www.nytimes.com Subscribe to The Young Turks: bit.ly Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com The Largest Online New Show in the World. Get smart about ALEC #F29

On February 29th, Occupy Portland calls for a national day of non-violent direct action to reclaim our voices and challenge our society?s obsession with profit and greed by shutting down the corporations. We are rejecting a society that does not allow us control of our future. We will reclaim our ability to shape our world in a democratic, cooperative, just and sustainable direction. We call on people to target corporations that are part of the American Legislative Exchange Council which is a prime example of the way corporations buy off legislators and craft legislation that serves the interests of corporations and not people. They used it to create the anti-labor legislation in Wisconsin and the racist bill SB 1070 in Arizona among so many others. They use ALEC to spread pro big business laws around the country. McDonald's & Wendy's Drop Out Of ALEC

"We have yet another company that has dropped ALEC. ALEC is the American Legislative Exchange council, they're the group that gets business and large corporations together with state legislatures. Often times their lobbyists simply write the bills for them and then have the legislatures hand it in." Cenk Uygur discusses the flood of corporations leaving ALEC thanks to the activism of progressive groups like Color of Change and PCCC.
