Alfred Jensen/Sol Lewitt Systems and Transformation at PACE GALLERY

James Kalm battles the drizzle and traffic of drive time Manhattan to bring viewers a tour of this delectable yet conceptually challenging two person show. As a long time fan of Alfred Jensen, there was little doubt that with or without his video camera, James Kalm would have visited this show. However, once he'd smoozed his way into recording this opening, he was pleased with the appropriate and satisfying pairing of these two bodies of work. Using mathematical systems and other guiding factors to logically develop their ideas and compositions, there is nonetheless a bold contrast between the "cool" Minimal grids and cubes of LeWitt and the sensual ritualistic patterns achieved by Jensen. These works are at once visual treats, as well as brainteasers evoking the viewers skills in the un-coding of pattern and system.

Highlights from "A Point in Space..." at DAVID ZWIRNER Gallery

James Kalm reluctantly selects a few outstanding works to present from this fabulous group show, "a point in space is a place for an argument". Due to late arrival and the limited time format, this presentation focuses on fascinating works rarely seen in New York. Featuring a selection of paintings by the painter cult favorite Forrest Bess, a Paul Thek sculpture that foretells the work of Damien Hirst, and a group of seminal early works by Alfred Jensen, though brief this overview recommends the quality and importance of this exhibition

Phong Bui Studio Visit

James Kalm is pleased to bring viewers a surprise studio visit with Brooklyn Rail publisher and artist, Phong Bui. With little to begin with, besides a passionate love for art and artists, Phong has guided the Rail from an amateurishly youthful experiment, to become one of New York City's most influential newspapers presenting an unpretentious "critical perspective on arts, politics and culture." During this brief visit, Phong talks about his interview techniques, we view Jonas Mekas' "The Song of AVILA", peak at Phong's portrait project, and discuss the mission of the Brooklyn Rail.

Group Show at David Zwirner Gallery - June 28, 2007

Show titled "a point in space is a place for argument". Featuring work by Hans Accola, Lynda Benglis, Forrest Bess, Julien Bismuth, Andre Cadere, John Chamberlain, Raoul De Keyser, Vincent Fecteau, Isa Genzken, Mary Heilmann, Eva Hesse, Alfred Jensen, Mike Kelley, Rachel Khedoori, Lee Lozano, Michael Mahalchik, Gordon Matta-Clark, Paul McCarthy, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenburg, Joe Overstreet, Steven Parrino, Jason Rhoades, Dieter Roth, Niki de Saint Phalle, Fred Sandback, Katy Schimert, Al Taylor, Paul Thek, and Cathy Wilkes. Wittgenstein argued an object's existence is predicated on its situation in space; a point in a visual field must have color and a tactile object must have a degree of solidity to differentiate it from infinite space. Spanning the last five decades, the works on view present multiple modes by which artists have approached the object in space. The abstract philosophy becomes physical as artists engage the tensions of materiality, form, and function.
