Southeast Asian nations join forces to fight drug trade

An increase in drug trafficking in Southeast Asia's Golden Triangle has prompted police from the three Golden Triangle nations - Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand - along with China to join forces to make the area safe from its infamous drug trade. Surrounded by the waters of the Mekong River, the Golden Triangle nations have ramped up marine-based patrolling of boats sailing across the porous borders of the three nations. In the first of three special reports focusing on the Mekong River, Al Jazeera's Wayne Hay goes on patrol with the Thai marine police.

Low cost air carriers flying high in Asia

The global economic crisis has had at least one winner: discount airlines. Many passengers around the world now appear willing to sacrifice luxury for cheaper flights. The Asia-Pacific region, in particular, is where low-cost carriers are proving most popular and the number of people flying is increasing at 6.5 per cent a year. The amount they are willing to pay, however, is falling. Al Jazeera's Andrew Thomas reports from Sydney, Australia.

US responds to China tensions with neighbours

China's growing military power, and the increasing nuclear threat from North Korea, has seen the US turn more of its attention toward Asia. Recent military exercises by the US and the Philippines in the South China Sea's disputed Spratly Islands have threatened to challenge the Asia-Pacific balance of power. The US has followed those joint exercises with similar drills with Vietnamese troops off the western Philippines. With top level US-Philippine security talks scheduled for Monday in Washington, the standoff between Beijing and Manila over disputed territorial waters, and the modernisation of the Philippines' military with the help of the US, are likely to be high on the agenda. Al Jazeera's Marga Ortigas reports from Manila.

Asia to take lead in global air travel

Asia looks set to become the world's busiest market for air travel in a few years, as the US and Europe cut back on aviation. At the Singapore airshow, airlines have been on a shopping spree. Airbus has taken orders worth $1.3 trillion, and Boeing had good news too, signing its biggest commercial-jet deal ever. Al Jazeera's Scott Heidler reports from Singapore.

Mekong River losing its Irrawaddy dolphin population

Southeast Asia's Mekong River is home to one of the last populations of Irrawaddy dolphins, but they are now a critically endangered species. The number of dolphins has been fast dwindling in the past one decade; the population in the Mekong is probably less than 100 these days. The cause of the deaths has been baffling, but what is worse is that conservationists cannot agree on how to save it. In the second part of our series on the Mekong, Stephanie Scawen reports from Kratie in Cambodia.
