Autonomous Helicopters Teach Themselves to Fly Stunts

Stanford computer scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that enables robotic helicopters to teach themselves to fly difficult stunts by watching other helicopters perform the same maneuvers. Autonomous Helicopter with Camera

This autonomous helicopter was being demonstrated at the InfoAg 2011 conference. It has a camera on the bottom to take pictures of whatever it is flying over. You program it with a series of GPS waypoints, then it flies that path and takes pictures. When it lands, you can stitch the photos together for a very large image of a field. Runs on gasoline, has a flight time of 30-45 minutes, and can travel up to 6 miles away for imagery.

Stanford Autonomous Helicopter - Autorotation landing

The Stanford Autonomous Helicopter performing power-off descent and landing under computer control. Helicopters can glide and land in a flight mode known as "autorotation" without engine power. In this mode, the helicopter's descent keeps the rotor blades spinning, allowing the computer to maintain control.
