Playing Bossa Nova Grooves With Brushes - Drum Lesson

In the video below it shows a couple tricks I like to use when playing boss nova grooves. It gives your playing a little bit of a softer feel and adds a new texture to it as well. The first one is playing with the brush on the snare the exact same way as play the hi hat or ride cymbal part And the second is playing with the brush pressed on the snare drum and sliding the brush back and forth producing a shaker sound. This one can be a little tricky so you'll want to PRACTICE THIS SLOWLY between the bass drum part and brush part only, so you can match them up on beats "and" of 2 to 3 and "and" of 4 to 1.

Practice brush playing

This video is me practicing my brush playing technique. I am working on a three stroke ruff that I coped from Steve Gadd. The pattern is LLR ruff. He also uses a 5 and 7 stroke roll pattern. I don't have the lick down, but my concept was to see how my hands looked getting the sound. Anyhow it is another lick for my brush playing. My drums are a Ludwig Blue Sparkle Club Date kit with 14x20 kick, 8x12 tom, and 16x16 Classic Floor tom. The snare is a 5x14 Ludwig Black Beauty. Cymbals: 13" Sabian AA Regular Hats, 18" TOSCO Thin China, 18" Zildjian Armand Thin Crash, 20" Zildjian Deep Ride (1979), 20" Zildjian Oriental Crash of Doom, 14" Zildjian New Beat Hi Hats (1979) and a 15" Sabian AAX Studio crash heard not seen.
