C40-9Ws 9597, 9400 and 9403 made easy work of a relatively short westbound intermodal consist as they passed the Brickyard at 2:06 PM on the 22nd. In a nice little bit of timing, the last trailer cleared the scene just as C40-9Ws 9925 and 9365 crawled past in the other direction with a doublestack train. Brakeshoe smoke rolled off the wheels as the train continued its descent into Altoona - the smell lingered in my nose for hours.

It was a little bit of driving since I took the scenic route down past Horseshoe Curve, but my next stop on the 22nd was the Brickyard crossing on the outskirts of Altoona; the last grade crossing in town as westbounds dig in for the climb to Gallitzin - or the first as eastbounds descend in a haze of pungent brakeshoe smoke. The crossing's namesake stood sentinel in the background as C40-9Ws 9610 and 9953 and C40-9 8848 chugged past with a westbound trailer train at 1:35 PM, doing their best to maintain their speed.
