Soul Assassins are a loose collective of musicians and graphic artists affiliated to the hip hop group Cypress Hill, formed in the early 1990s. It is also the name of Cypress Hill's publishing company. In 1997 and 2000 two albums under the name Soul Assassins were released. Both albums featured an army of rappers and both were almost entirely produced by Cypress Hill's beatsmith DJ Muggs, with minor contributions by The Alchemist (three songs) and DJ Khalil (one song) on the second volume.

Prakazrel Samuel Michel, known as Pras, (born October 19, 1972) is a Grammy Award-winning American rapper, actor, film producer, and promoter for the hip hop trio The Fugees, considered one of the most influential groups of the 1990s for their album The Score. Pras has also forged a successful solo career, beginning with an international hit single from his first full-length solo LP, "Ghetto Supastar (That Is What You Are)", featuring Mýa and Ol' Dirty Bastard. "Ghetto Superstar" became a top ten single in 1999, and the #8 most played single; it was received with critical acclaim and earned Pras a performance at the World Music Awards. The hit single was included in the soundtrack for the Warren Beatty-starring film, "Bulworth". "Ghetto Superstar" spent eight weeks in the UK Top 5, peaking at number 2 in July of 1998, and reached US #15 a month later. "Blue Angels", from the same album, was acknowledged as a UK Top 10 hit, reaching #6 in November of the same year.

"Still DRE" is a song by Dr. Dre, released as the lead single from his multi-platinum second album 2001. This song features Snoop Dogg on the intro, chorus and outro. The single was very popular, helping the album reach multi-platinum status. The lyrics, co-written by Jay-Z (credited as S. Carter in the album's liner notes) announce Dre's triumphant return to the forefront of the hip-hop scene. A sample: Ladies, they pay homage, but haters say Dre fell off/How nigga? My last album was The Chronic. The song was produced by Dre with Mel-Man, with Camara Kambon and Scott Storch on keyboards, who created the famous piano riff. It debuted at number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100 and fell off the charts soon after. It was more successful in the UK reaching #6 there. It samples Grant Green's "Maybe Tomorrow" from his 1971 album Visions. Digital Underground is an alternative rap group hailing from Oakland, California, who played a big part in giving West Coast rap the spotlight. Their leader was Greg "Shock G" Jacobs, who spent most of his youth in New York City and southern Florida. Heavily influenced by the various funk bands of the 1970s, Digital Underground sampled their music frequently, which quickly became a defining element of west-coast rap. Their 'alternative' status owes much to their unabashedly spaced-out image, which lay in contrast to the gangster rap that most west coast acts focused on. The group's original image was set up to be a tribute to social activists The Black Panthers, but when Public Enemy became a prominent band, Jacobs chose to take the group's image in a more whimsical direction, that of an updated Parliament-Funkadelic for the hip-hop audience. Jacobs designed detailed album covers and cartoon-laced liner notes, a homage to Parliament-Funkadelic album designs. They are also notable for catapulting member Tupac Shakur into the spotlight.

He has released a total of four solo albums and is believed to be working in the studio on his fifth album with featured artist such as Mýa and Ol' Dirty Bastard's younger brother, and also production by The Heatmakerz and RZA. The Roots are a Grammy award-winning American hip hop band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They are famed for beginning with a jazzy, eclectic approach to hip hop which still includes live instrumentals. Their debut album was released in 1993 and they have collaborated with a wide range of artists from different genres, including Roy Ayers and Cody Chesnutt. The Roots have generated a great deal of critical acclaim and influenced numerous rap and R&B acts. On March 2, 2009, The Roots began a tenure as the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The group's original lineup was formed when rapper (Black Thought Tariq Trotter) and drummer Questlove (Amir Thompson) became friends at the Philadelphia High School for Creative Performing Arts around 1987. They began to do shows around Philadelphia and New York City with bassist Leon "Hub" Hubbard and rapper Malik B.By 1991, Black Thought began attending Millersville University and established the line-up, under the collective name The Square Roots. In 1993, the Roots recorded an album Organix to promote at European concerts.
