Messerschmitt Me 321/323 Gigant

The Messerschmitt Me 321 Gigant was a large German cargo glider aircraft developed during the Second World War. The Me 263 had a framework of steel tubing provided by the Mannesmann company, with wooden spars and a covering of doped fabric. This allowed for quick construction and easy repair when needed and also saved weight. The Me 263 was redesignated the Me 321 and was nicknamed Gigant (Giant) due to its huge size. Its nose stood over 6 metres (20 ft) high, and was made up of two clamshell doors. The doors could only be opened from the inside, when ramps would be used to allow vehicles to drive in or out. Compared to the Ju 52, the Me 321 offered a load area 6 times larger, at around 100 square metres (1100 sq ft), and could accommodate a gross cargo weighing up to 23 metric tons (23 long tons). The cargo space had been designed to replicate the load space of a standard German railway flatcar, allowing any cargo that could travel by rail to fit into an Me 321. Alternatively, if used for passenger transport, 120-130 fully equipped troops could be accommodated. The Me 321 was fitted with a jettisonable undercarriage comprising two Bf 109 tail wheels at the front and two Junkers Ju 90 main wheels at the rear and was intended to land on four extendable skids. The first flight of the prototype Me 321 V1 took place on February 25, 1941, towed into the air by a Junkers Ju 90. It was piloted by Messerschmitt test pilot Karl Baur, and carried 3 tonnes of ballast. Baur reported ...

Wiking 077313 Fliegl Gigant ASW 288 afschuifwagen 1:32

Fliegl Gigant ASW 288 afschuifwagen This time WIKING has succeeded in creating a model of Fliegl's powerful "Giant" ASW288 dumper truck in 1:32 which is not only true to the original in terms of the detail but above all also in terms of its functions. The model demonstrates those functions in exactly the same way as the original vehicle. Thus the principle of the movable front wall that can be hydraulically pushed backwards towards the back of the dumper in order to push off the load being carried can be authentically simulated -- a sheer pleasure for die-cast enthusiasts. The ASW 288 is designed for universal use as a means of transporting not only all kinds of spreading materials such as cow dung and poultry manure but also bulk pourable goods such as sewage sludge, compost or lime. The Fliegl "Giant" dumper truck was awarded the silver medal at Agritechnica by the German Agriculture Association on account of its multi-purpose design. It can be put together with any of WIKING's tractors to create attractive combinations. Artikelnr.: 077313 Schaal: 1:32 Afmetingen: 43,0 x 14,5 x 16,0 cm Introductiejaar: 12/2011

Gigant der Meere p.1 - Admiral Zheng He (1371-1433)

Little did the famous Muslim geographer, Ibn Battuta know, that about 22 years after his historic visit to China, the Mongol Dynasty (called the Yuan Dynasty in China) would be overthrown. The Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) would begin. A Muslim boy would help a Chinese prince. That prince would become emperor and the boy would grow up to be the "Admiral of the Chinese Fleet." His name... Zheng He. The ships that he would sail throughout the Indian Ocean would retrace some of the same routes taken by Ibn Battuta, but he would be in huge boats called "junks". He would go to East Africa, Makkah, Persian Gulf, and throughout the Indian Ocean. Speak of the world's first navigators and the names Christopher Columbus or Vasco da Gama flash through a Western mind. Little known are the remarkable feats that a Chinese Muslim Zheng He (1371-1433) had accomplished decades before the two European adventurers. A Muslim and a warrior, Zheng He helped transform China into the region's, and perhaps the world's, superpower of his time. In 1405, Zheng was chosen to lead the biggest naval expedition in history up to that time. Over the next 28 years (1405-1433), he commanded seven fleets that visited 37 countries, through Southeast Asia to faraway Africa and Arabia. In those years, China had by far the biggest ships of the time. In 1420 the Ming navy dwarfed the combined navies of Europe. Ma He or Haji Mahmud Shams, as he was originally known, was born in 1371 to a poor ethnic Hui (Chinese ...
